Why is Sarah Crying in vs. the Other Guy

There are spoilers ahead for season 3...

Near the end of Chuck vs. the Other guy, when Shaw has Sarah drugged at the cafe and tells her his plan to kill her, she's crying (tears stream down her cheeks). It's a touching and powerful scene. But I'm wondering why she's crying.

Is it because she thinks she's going to die and will miss out on the life with Chuck she's always wanted (especially since they just started out together)...or is it because she feels bad that Shaw has fallen so far (joining the Ring)...or because of any guilt she had for killing his wife?

It's really not a big deal, but given how Sarah was involved with Shaw and killed his wife and just started dating Chuck, there's a lot going on in that pretty little head of hers. Just looking for some insight if anyone has any thoughts.

I think it's because she thinks she's going to die (and doesn't want to yet) because of all that she and Chuck hope to experience together. But hey, I'm a romantic.

I agree. In my opinion, what Sarah felt was a complex emotion, a combination of all the things that you listed above (fear, desperation, regret), which I think is pretty normal for someone who's about to die.

I say it's because she's going to die, and miss out on a wonderful life with Chuck, and her situation is absolutely hopeless. She's drugged and helpless, her partner's betrayed her, and the nearest help (she thinks) is an ocean and a continent away ... and that help doesn't even have any reason to think anything is wrong.

Little does she know how much Morgan likes his Sonny Chiba movies .... heh heh heh ...

Agreed. She had just told Chuck she loved him a couple of days earlier, and there's no worse feeling for her than not being able to do something when bad things are happening. She regretted killing Shaw's wife, but obviously Shaw was too far gone in his rage to forgive her. She was so close to finally getting what she wanted in life, and Shaw was about to take all of it away.

Fortunately, she had a very smart boyfriend.

A bigger question for me, in fact two bigger questions have always been:

Who was she starting to cry for when the building exploded in American Hero?

To who (whom?) did her tear filled eyes move to in Fake Name?

reply

Tut,

For me, the answer to both questions is Chuck. I have no proof, just a gut feeling. I vacillate between Chuck/Shaw in Fake Name, because she's pretty upset with Chuck at that point for (her perceived) his "change." So she might be looking at Shaw, though I doubt it. Chuck's first in her heart - always was, always will be.

I have no doubt in Hero that it's Chuck's possible demise she's lamenting the most. And I think that the heartfelt kiss she gives Shaw before he leaves is her putting her emotions for Chuck (even if subconsciously) into it more that any emotions she has for Shaw.

But that's just me...

I agree with your assessment, martraynor. I think it was Chuck she was looking at and the tearful smile she gave as the two appeared through the smoke, it to me looked like she was looking at Chuck and her heart was saying 'there is my hero, the one who is doing a self-less act" by saving the man who he thought "she cared about" more than himself. I think she knew then and there that Chuck had not changed like she may have thought before.

I've always assumed she suddenly realised that in the space of one season, she'd gone from the awesome, kick-ass, day-saving superspy of season 1 and 2 to a virtual shop window dummy and static plot device to give Wonder-Chuck his requisite damsel to rescue.

Ugh. Five years on and it still brings the rage.

I think you've totally misinterpreted the situation, the season, and the show, and I have to ask myself: why?

@scarlet_symon

Best answer ever!! Bravo. I agree completely with you on this.

To this day I despise most of season three because of the exact reason you mentioned.
