This movie is NOT gritty in the least bit!
I do not get why this movie is called 'gritty' on this board. There is nothing the least bit gritty about it.
Gritty seems to be a buzzword used as a selling point for why this movie is good, yet it is not gritty, so does that make it in actuality not good? Does this movie have any other selling points that it does not fail with, like it does with 'gritty?'
Other than some random deaths of characters we know absolutely nothing about in the first few scenes, and there is nothing new in the depiction of those deaths that make them gritty, almost nothing else happens. The two times after that that something does happen, the only other parts of the movie that could be remotely be considered 'gritty,' are almost completely off-screen, and entirely off-screen.
The movie instantly cuts away after the muzzle flash when the mom gets shot. Is that supposed to be gritty? It's not. A much more gritty depiction of the exact same thing was shown in The Godfather II way back in 1974, which IIRC didn't cut away like Gomorra does. That is to say, Gomorra has far less grittiness than a comparable movie made in 1974.
In fact, The Godfather I is also way, way more gritty than Gomorra.
Then with the deaths of the two idiot cokehead thugs, it is entirely off-screen. Showing them die on-screen wouldn't have been gritty anyway, but the way they die off-screen is nothing short of pathetic.
Calling Gomorra gritty is a totally inaccurate statement.
