Is the viewer supposed to CARE about any of the crap in this movie?

For example, are the deaths of the two cokehead idiot thugs at the end supposed to be 'tragic' and make the viewer sad? Because it doesn't have that effect at all. They should have been eliminated within the first 5 minutes that they came on-screen, instead of having it take 2+ hours. That it took so long, and wastes so much of the viewer's time watching them be degenerate idiots is the only tragic part about it.

I didn't find one character worth caring one iota about in the whole movie, other than perhaps the mom.

But why didn't she, and why didn't every else, just move somewhere decent if life there is so bad and deadly for them? They'd all have to be total idiots to stay.

The movie seemed to be trying to preach the message that the mafia is evil. However, to make that message convincing, they would have to put characters worth caring about into the movie, which they didn't. As a result, the movie falls flat and accomplishes nothing.

Without an explanation you're an idiot as well.

Does anyone care about the tripe that Hollywood pumps out?

Well, they do actually- and that's the tragedy of it. . . .

Hollywood is a business so people care about that aspect of it.

Film fans and buffs, whatever, care about Hollywood films, American films, etc. Obviously many might be not worthy of being cared about too much. Do the trashy Hollywood films have a bad effect on culture? Yes, very likely.

The two young lads in the film at the beginning mention Scarface as their model for doing what they do.

As far as caring about people in the film, the overall feeling is that we are quite distanced from them. The actual goings on in the film - I personally don't want to be too close to the stuff going on with the people involved so overall the film has this distanced, documentary feel.

That is not the most exciting of things to watch though, by any means...!

This was not produced by a Hollywood studio.
So this is not Hollywood crap, is it?
It's an Italian movie made by and Italian director.
It's not really tailored for American audiences.

And I don't even understand why people care about the characters.
I cared about Pasqual and about those two stupid boys.
I couldn't sympathize with Don Ciro because I didn't understand what he was doing.
But it was interesting to see how many of the people were connected with the mob.

How old are you pal? You'd still have to be a kid to not realise that life is nowhere near as simple... otherwise we'd all be living in 100% safe areas, and there'd be no innocents for the criminals to exploit.

Yeah, I don't think the OP has ever faced hardships or been out on his own. Not that I have, haha... Still, I have empathy for those who do. The entire movie was about exploitation of the innocent, and if you really didn't have even a LITTLE empathy for all of the main characters (even the two dumb kids), you must be a rather harsh person.

You don't even feel bad for the boy who has the gangsters turn on him and force him to help them kill that woman? Sure, he joined them of his own free will, but he's just a *beep* kid. He didn't know the realities of what they do. He's not old enough to understand the consequences of joining those guys. By the time he realizes that, he wants to do the right thing and preserve his innocence - but it's too late.

This movie should teach mafia is evil? Thats cool. Yeah, sure, there is a motivation to make a movie.
