Toto ****spoiler****

What happened to Toto?

He seemed to disappear from the film after setting up his mother.

reply

It wasn't his mother, it was the mother of his friend Simone. But, yes, his story seemed to end at that point; a shame as it would have been nice to have seen a reaction to his actions.

He was given the choice of being with them or against them.

It was made clear if he was against he couldnt be trusted and would be taken care of.

Unfortunately for the British, the two leading film magazines (Empire and Total Film) both make the mistake in the review of claiming Maria is his mother. Not that that bothered me as much as the former giving away the ending of Pasquale's plot strand right enough...

I gave up on Empire long ago. There main priority became trying to look clever rather than any genuine interest in film.

In fairness though, in the context of this thread, the film's own trailer unforgivably gives away the ending to the Toto thread.

I always close my eyes during trailers of films I want to see! You only have yourselves to blame!!

Great film but, yes, at times difficult to follow. I got confused between Toto's mother and his mother's friend too but by the time the episode came to its climax, I'd worked it out.

In response to another poster, doesn't Toto join the Columbians rather than the Camorra?

Hmm, can't say I agree there. As, thanks to the Cineworld Unlimited Card, I see virtually everything, and there are at least 4 trailers before every film, I don't think it reasonable to expect cinemagoers to sit with eyes shut in a cinema for ten minutes every night. I appreciate that some people don't like to see trailers at all, and if so, fair enough, avoid them. But most trailer are well done and, while they may give more away than some viewers would choose, giving away really major spoilers or plot developments is both unusual and pretty unforgivable. It isn't helped if the film is pretty heavily trailed, as Gomorra was in my local - I must have seen the trailer half a dozen times at least. That final shot of Toto simply should not have been included - it was the climax of that entire thread! Its bad trailer making and bad marketing, and does the film a disservice.

It almost appears that whoever edited the trailer didn't actually watch the film properly. Had that shot came even later in the film, I doubt it would have been included (although I have seen the very last shot of a film in trailers so it can happen). But that IS unusual, and suggests that the editor wasn't fully aware that the film effectively had not one climax, but several mini ones, each of equal importance.

Its interesting to note that it appears only in International trailers, not the original Italian one, and one wonders if the filmmakers approved it - I very much doubt it, and sincerely hope not.

Yes that is the best method,

In Battlestar Galactica series, in the beginning of an episode a short trailer is shown which spoils the whole episode. So I close my Eyes!

Was Toto a professional actor or an amateur/ real-life resident like some actors in this movie?

Just watched this last night and thankfully, I didn't watch the trailer until after the movie itself. I would have been PO'd by the spoilers in the trailer.

I think Toto's story was pretty much done at that point. He betrayed his best friend's mother and someone he was close to. You can tell by the fact that he doesn't turn around to look indicates that his conscience isn't really clear and therefore whatever "innocence" he had is over. Toto would probably become just another victim of those seemingly random paranoia-inducing project shootouts if the film continued his story. Personally, I found myself caring about Pasquale and it was SO depressing to see Scarlett Johansson's cameo and what it meant for Pasquale.

Pasquale managed to build a new life though. Yes at great cost. He lost the trade/craft/art he loved. But there was pride in that craft flickering over his face as he watched his work of art being praised, being shown to the world.
