Definitely a good choice for a gangsters gun, small but extremely deadly
Firearms like Beretta 93R or Glock 18 aren't actually very popular or useful and they haven't ever been manufactured in very significant numbers. As they are quite small and lightweight, the automatic/burst fire is very difficult to control and as the magazine capacity is usually smaller than in "full-sized" submachine guns, the shooter goes out of ammo very quickly.
And contrary to what Hollywood films show us, assault rifles, submachine guns and other "military weapons" aren't usually operated on full automatic fire as it is still very inaccurate and mostly a waste of ammo even with larger guns. So most of the time it is better to stick with a regular semiautomatic pistol (same capacity, accuracy etc. as the "machine pistols" but cheaper price) or with a full-sized submachine gun like MP5 (larger capacity, higher accuracy).
An Italian criminal would have probably acquired Beretta 93R just because it is considered "cool", not because it is in any way a practical firearm. Just like they like to put up Desert Eagles and such "cool" but totally impractical weapons in every film.
