Scorsese likes it so they use his name???

I watched this the other day on Netflix and the very first credit that comes up says "Martin Scorsese Presents"

So I looked it up and Martin had absolutely nothing to do with the making of this film...He just liked it a lot. This is just confusing to me. How are they allowed to wave his name around like that? And why would Scorses allow this? It just seems like a cheap stunt. Obviously when Scorsese's name is attached to a film, it's going to get a lot more views and attention. It might also change the perception that people have of the film. It didn't fool me, but I can guarantee that the average joe will see that name and think..."Oh hey this is a Scorsese movie. It'll be great!"

ANyway, what did you think when you saw that?

Well, maybe Scorsese really liked the film and gave his permission (and probably even suggested) to use his name to advertise it. I have the European DVD release and I don't recall seeing Scorsese's name anywhere on it but maybe it's on the American version.

As to whether it is misleading to claim that Martin Scorsese "presents" this film, I think that in the past saying that someone "presents" something although they really had nothing to do with it was more common. Nowadays such a claim would, I believe, suggest some kind of contribution to the work being presented and the usage here could be a bit archaic. But in theory you could say that Scorsese "presents" this film to the American audiences as his endorsement probably makes it more popular/widely known.

I'm not that enamoured with Scorsese that I would really care if he recommended this or that. European films on average are of higher standard than American films and are more usually worthy to take a look at.
