I just watched Gomorra and i think that its one of my all time favourite movies! I like the authentic style of the movie, and the director made a great job in choosing the places to shoot it, and making a great atmosphere in the movie.

I have also watched Hate (La haine) and City of God, and thought if anyone could recommend some movies in similar style? Like some movie shot at neighborhoods with social problems, not nessacarily about mafia or gangsters, but somehow with same theme. I prefer realistic films, and im open for anything. Not only hot shot hollywood movies, but also foreign movies.

Go for it, come with some recommendations! :)

Id recommend elite squad to you it another brazillian film set in the slums but shown from the point of view off two elite police officer definitely worth a watch.

Another one would be city of men which again is set in the slums of brazil not quite as good as city of god but still good all the same.

Also try the general an irish film based on a notorious criminal in ireland.

And lastly although not in the same veins as city of god or la haine and you not seeming to be truned off by foreign films having just watched it id 100% say watch flame and citron an amazing film.

hope you try some of these films and enjoy them as much as i have.

West Side Story, The Aristocats, Dodes'Ka-Den. Last one is serious.

Once Were Warriors shows how it is in some of the poorer parts of New Zealand. Check it out.

Thankyou VERY much EasternMafia, with some of those recommendations (specifically Bal Can-Can & Rane) you've opened me up to a lot of Eastern European cinema I'd have never seen.. you're a *beep* legend.

And I fully agree with you on the travel thing.. stayed in Poland for a month this summer with a polish family (i live in england) and it really opens your eyes. I plan to do a lot more hopefully

Slightly in the realm of these raw films is Kids, but you could also just stick with the 1984 Seattle doc "Streetwise". One of the best docs ive seen, but only viewable on youtube for now.

Have you seen Tsotsi?

I really enjoyed that one. You should check it out. It doesn't get a lot of attention, but it's real good.
