Does Laurie eat?

Laurie looks too thin. Whenever she comes on screen I don't understand how her parents don't freak out and instead of discussing wallpaper with her discuss her skeletal frame. It is so distracting to me I can't pay attention to anything else during her scenes. What gives? I can't help but think eating disorder.

reply

Yes, she's pretty unattractive since she apparently eats a strawberry a day... Also, could she get any paler? Her looks combined with her attitude make her thoroughly unenjoyable.

reply

LOL. I don't even think she eats a strawberry a day - looks like her diet entirely consists of Diet Coke (Tab?) and cigarettes.

reply

Yeah, way too skinny. Women were expected if not preferred to have more curve to them in 1976. Look at how bathing suits were constructed. That extra material isn't just to cover up those hairy crotches.

reply

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks she's unattractive. Downright homely. Hard to watch or take seriously. Looks like a female Macaulay Culkin.

reply

She probably does eat, one or two fries and some TAB! She doesn't do anything for me and I'm sure there would be much hotter girls in her class for the dumb ass teacher to choose from! Hell, all those swingers, a single teacher would be in heaven with all those lonely Moms!
Her and the Thompson's son, Rick, are the most annoying, ugly teens I have ever seen!

reply

Personally, I think all the kids on this show, boys or girls, are downright homely, not to mention poor actors. I tend to wander out of the room or hit the FF button when they stagger into the shot.

Britt Robertson (Samantha) is fairly awesome.

You have to remember that she is suposed to be 16?

reply

What does her being sixteen have to do with her weight?

reply

She's so freakishly skinny, I can't stand looking at her.

reply

i r- Many girls are underdeveloped at 16. A few bloom early, some late.

reply

how old is the actress thouguh?? she is really skinny...

reply

yeah when i was 16 (in1972 btw) i already looked like dolly parton jr.-not a blonde tho...and yes at almost 52 i still do .

reply

Dude not 16, 17.

reply

she's not unhealthy looking. most americans are overweight anyway so she only looks too thin to you b/c you're used to looking at fatness but really her weight is fine. plus she's 16 on the show and most girls are smaller at 16 and gain weight as they grow older. i used to be a size 0 and after 7 years, i am now a 4/6

reply

[deleted]

how old is the actress who plays her though?

reply

I think Laurie is perfect for the role. She's not the cliched 'Lolita' that would so often be put in such a part. She's just a lanky girl who looks like lanky girls did in the mid 70's. She's very attractive, it's just that we're so used to what shoved down our throats that "attractive" is a silicone enhanced, collagen injected clone and any other look for a female is sub par.

reply

she's too skinny... she's like a toothpick, she makes Paris Hilton seem obese...

reply

Ah yes, now people are telling us that "true" beauty really IS skinny... FFS! Why can't people just be ugly without a whole pathology connected to it? Laurie is not attractive. If you think she is, awesome. There are more than just a few, though, who do not.

*cue the person who says that most typing here are probably ugly*

She was totally unattractive to me both physically and interpersonally. She basically thought she knew better or more than everybody else except for her "wunderkind" summer school teacher, and she probably even fancied herself more mature than him (i.e. he's unable to "accept" their relationship). She's as dogmatic about her bra-burning, liberal ideas as those against whom she rails against, and she talks back to her parents all the time! STFU Laurie! I know you think that you've experienced all you can experience at age 16, but show your parents some respect.

So yeah, that combined with her E.T. physique made me roll my eyes whenever she came on screen.

/end rant

reply

she would be attractive if she added about 15 pounds...

she's like what 5'6" and less than 100 pounds?

reply

First off on her size.. there really were a lot of girls who were ultra-skinny
(Twiggy, anyone?) I look at pics of my mom and her sister and both were built alot of Laurie.

As far as her being a know-it-all teenager.. well that seems pretty spot on for most teens. I know when I was 16 I knew everything.. and my parents were pretty stupid and knew nothing. The older I get the smarter they get.

Laurie's character reminds me a lot of the people I hung out with high school.

Like her or not there really are real teenagers in the world.

my parents grew up in the seventies. my mom thinks that anorexia or eating disorders started around that time (or kind of blew up). she tells me a lot of women wanted to be like the skinny stars they saw on TV and in magazines. many did drugs (cocaine, etc) and that's one of the ways they kept skinny so girls and guys wanted to imitate that look, but certain people didn't do drugs and just opted for eating less and exercising a lot as you can see in the 80s. even my mom told me that she used to eat an apple a day & a little bit of mushroom soup just to stay super thin!!! it was a new thing for many models too - with Twiggy and some other famous models whose names i can't remember right now. My mom modeled a little bit & worked for a designer in Russia and many girls were trying to imitate the ballerina look, the disco dancers look, and because many famous people denied having eating disorders, saying things like they eat everything and a lot when in fact it wasn't true and it was drugs, cigarettes, sodas, and alcohol they consumed most. back then there weren't as many paparazzis (if any at all) so people really did believe what they actors/celebrities said.

reply

Well, this is very true...however my body was just naturally very thin. I even tried to add to my diet the 'health drinks' of that time period which the football people were drinking to add pounds and muscle...no luck for me. Come to think of it...most of my friends were very thin also except for a couple... I actually think all the added vitamins and sugary drinks add the pounds today..plus the hormones which young girls take earlier and earlier...thus the fuller body earlier with curves. Honestly, don't think it is so healthy really.

reply

What does naturally very thin mean to you? do you mean you could eat like a horse and still stay at the same weight? if so i used to be the same way. until my mid 20s I could eat anything and not gain a pound for months, but that doesn't mean i didn't gain *any* pounds at all. my metabolism was just extremely active. I could burn calories very fast. I could eat steak, fries, icecream, junk all day for months and only gain 2 unnoticeable pounds. difference with me is that i had strange guilty pleasures (if you can call it that) where I would eat lots of soup, sashimi (raw fish) with tomatoes, or sour cream with cranberry jelly & i did martial arts for many years as well as gymnastics around 10 years old. I walked everywhere, loved biking and hiking - not for the health risk, but for fun. people can condition their bodies to have a high metabolism. I looked very thin in my teens & the body mass index would have put me in the underweight category, which i definitely was - but the difference between teenagers and adults? metabolism. Metabolism eventually slows down, for some faster than others, just as aging accelerates, & etc etc.

curves aren't made of fat, they are mostly mostly muscle. women in the 1950s like Marilyn Monroe & Co were in the healthy ranges. People need some fat on their muscles - it's a natural, necessary lubricant. People who have no fat on their muscles have many health risks, and so do those who have too much fat.

Ok i'm done with the lecture

My mom was about her age at that time and she was tiny. That was before we all ate McDonalds like it was going out of style.

She's hard to look at..too thin...too much nostril, too little acting ability and talks too fast.

I have recently become familiar with this show by instantly watching it on Netflix. I am surprised by how much I like it but even more surprised by how thin the actress playing Laurie is. No, that is not a normal or healthy weight for anyone (remember, the camera is supposed to add 10-15lbs!). This means that she is practically non-existent in "real life".

But hey, it's possible that she just has an extremely fast metabolism and can't gain weight. I've never had that problem but I figure it would be difficult to deal with. I think the costume designer sticking her in all of those skimpy outfits is really the bad guy in all of this. Yes, halter tops and cut-offs were all the rage back then but there are ways to artfully conceal her skeletal frame.

I think the reason most viewers don't like her is due to her poor acting ability. And her character is soooooooo annoying! I also think the natural look doesn't serve her well at all....they need to put more make-up on her so she'll look less like Wednesday from the Addams family. :)

IMO, Laurie looks like a skeleton with skin and long black hair. She absolutely does not look healthy and it is not a good image to portray to young, impressionable girls

This is a fun show and I think Laurie is great! I don't know why you are giving her such a hard time. Yes she is a bit thin, but so are lots of young actresses. Someone mentioned "poor role model"- I hope young children aren't watching this show! I think she's beautiful, and I wish there were fewer mean-spirited comments about her. I'm crazy about Trina and Tom, and Janet has been growing on me ever since the pot brownies. I hope this show makes it.

reply

She probably lives on carrot sticks and TaB like every other teen in my neighborhood did back in the 70's. It seems that teens then were skinny. My mom says it's because fruits and veggies were inexpensive and Doritos and Chips Ahoy weren't buy one get one free every week or two back then.

I think she looks okay also. Those short-shorts were in back in those days ... I recall my lean/skinny/no-shape body at that age. People made fun of me thus my nick-name (Bird Legs)...and I absolutely had no shape to my upper body. Things have changed now tho!! HA! Kinda glad I didn't start out 'full-bodied' and 'perfect' in my teens...because I would be really dragging now! :) I do think she could use some sun tho!! After all it is summertime.

reply

when i look back at pics of my mom and aunts and thier friends they were very thin at that time. my mom weighed in at about 95 lbs that year, she wasn't anorexic or anything, but i think that a lot of people liked skinny because they did wear those short shorts and tight jeans... she said hers were so tight that she'd lay down and have her sister pull the zipper up and that's at 95 lbs!!! ala - dazed and confused...
as for laurie, she is to me what people were like then... thier awkwardness didn't seem to stick out as much as far as i can tell, which i obviously (due to above statements) wasn't around then, but when i look back at photos, seems like everyone had somehting going on that was a little odd. the only thing i can't get over is that, maybe it is because she is thin, but her teeth seem big... abnormally so.

reply

and i saw her grab a banana last night :)

I have to agree, the actress playing Laurie is really skinny. It's really creepy how thin she is. I guess that was normal back then but today, it just doesn't look right.

I love mankind. It's the people I can't stand.

I was in high school in the 70s. There were girls of all shapes and plenty of them were doing unhealthy things to themselves. If the show survives, it would be a good tie in if they addressed it since Karen Carpenter, the first time most people heard of anorexia, was diagnosed in 1975.

Does Laurie remind anyone else of this guy?

reply

Yes, frey78, your comparison is apt! Although I don't think Laurie's looks can be blamed solely on her weight. I just think she has odd facial features and even if she put on another 20 pounds her eyes would still be too close together, her mouth would still resemble that of a horse, and she'd still haev the nose of a pig. The only difference is she might gain a double-chin.

reply

Consider this. I've always heard that the camera ADDS pounds. Scary to think about, isn't it? Somebody give that girl a cheeseburger and fries, asap!!!

Here's a simpler question; What does her teacher see in her? Yes, she's unattractive but for Pete's sake - HE'S DATING A 16 YEAR OLD AND SHE'S HIS STUDENT! Hello?!! Someone call the moron police!!! And her parents accept this. Numbskulls...

reply

He may not be her teacher right now, but what happens when school starts in the fall? Even if she's not in her class, I can't imagine the school would be too thrilled about the relationship.

Methinks Laurie is heading for a major dumping.
