How common were swingers?

Was there a much larger following for swinging couples in the era the show was based on?

Swinging has never been a wide scale phenomenon. I would strongly suspect a significantly larger percentage of the population today to engage in the lifestyle than in the 70's. There was a weird innocence at the time where people seemes less afraid to discuss it, however.

Like today, anything goes.

Everyone was doing it, your parents probably aren't your real parents!

The whole point behind swingers and swinging in general, of course including having sex with others, was that it always involved couples. The lifestyle rarely included singles unless the "single" was invited by the swinger couple. When you write "the guy or girl you go home with" aren't you implying singles?

The people came to the party as couples but switched up to whatever single they wanted to be with.
That doesn't make sense. If they "come to the party as couples" they don't suddenly become "single".

They're all still "couples", no one is "single", but they pick someone other than their "couple partner" to be with. Usually with the consent of their partner.

You seem to keep forgetting this is a "couples" lifestyle and a pretty strict rule they abide by.

Ummm... no, it's not just a couples' lifestyle. There are numerous singles who participate in the community - certainly more single males than females, but a large number of both nonetheless.
