The detectives didn't want it to be a problem/announce the killer is on the lose.

Can't they get in trouble because of that? Because since they did not notify people, people from Prom are dying because of them when they could be staying at home and be safe.

Probably didn't want to cause a panic, but people locked in their homes probably would've prevented the bloodshed.
