Why kill her friends?

What was the point in him killing her friends? Couldn't he just wait till Donna was alone and then grab her? Although, there wouldn't be a movie if her didn't kill somebody, right?

He was so obsessed with her that he wanted to kill her friends and family so he wouldn't have them as competition. He figured that with them out of the way, he would be the only one Donna would turn to and rely on.

that and he wanted to isolate her so all she'd have left was him. and most of them ran into him or went looking for him so he had to kill them because they all knew who he was and would call the police.

To increase the body count. It's a teen slasher movie, remember?

It was indeed pointless. While I can buy Fenton's reason for going after Lisa and Bobby, killing Claire and Michael was pointless mainly cos' they weren't even aware of his presence at the hotel. Had he kept his ass hidden and quiet while inside the room, neither Claire or Michael would've notice him there.

The "he didn't wanna share her with anyone" excuse doesn't cut it. How does Michael fit in that scenario? And if so, how come he didn't even attempt to kill Ronnie and Donna's uncle and aunt?

It's just lazy and crappy writting all around. There were at least three moments where he had the chance to grab Donna, knock her out and take her unconscious ass somewhere else, but no, instead he decided it was way more convenient to waste time offing random people while giving the cops the chance to arrive and walk around, risking his ass for getting caught... Lucky for him, the cops were even dumber than him.

I think the quotes section sums it up, he says 'ask her, we're in love, she doesn't have anyone left, I'm all she has', something to that effect, well that couldn't really be true unless her friends were dead too, killing the family wasn't enough.
