So many people missed it and that's why it was cancelled. It was an amazing show, but it had the worst PR campaign. I saw exactly one commercial for it before the first episode. It was also a concept show, and those are always risky because a lot of people don't get it right away. You can explain Two and a Half Men pretty easily; One rich womanizing alcoholic brother takes in his less well off newly divorced loser brother and his kid. But the explanation of PD would take at least a paragraph. And you can't start watching it three or four episodes in or you'll be totally lost. Put all that together, and it's amazing it lasted as long as it did.
shareThe Writer's Strike certainly didn't help it either. That's so true about the premise too; I remember trying to explain it to my brother, and tried to side-step the time related caveats of Ned's gift, but they're so essential to understanding the formula of the show and so he brushed it off, thinking it was just a romance instead of seeing the murder-mystery elements of it. Similarly, the only way my sister was able to understand it was by relating it to HBO's Carnivale.
shareI loved the show from the beginning just like I did with Bryan Fuller's previous show Wonderfalls. There was the writer's strike that cut season 1 short and that didn't help the show and cut the season to just 9 episodes ending in December just 2 months after its October premiere. Then even though they renewed it for season 2 It was off the air for 10 months before season 2 premiered in October 2008. This season it was cancelled after only 13 episodes were produced and ABC pulled the show off the air after the 10th episode, again in December just 2 months after the season premiere. There was another 5 1/2 month wait before we got to see the last 3 episodes that were produced that aired in late May and June of 2009. These last three were banished to a Saturday night burn-off slot.
It was a combination of ratings, the writer's strike and the long hiatuses that killed the show.
