He says the "series" is over but that could mean something different than it does in America. Or does it mean the season is over?

I know what i'm about to say now is a little late. However it's not the end of the programme, when we say it's the last in series or it's the end of the series, we normally mean it's the end of the current series and that another will be renewed shortly after.
