I don't think it's malicious or anything, it's just people sharing their stories. He only flips them if it's a boring story or if it would be really funny to do so.

It's my favorite part of the show. Last night I saw one young guy whose story was so hysterical Ricky Gervais was holding his stomach from laughing, everyone wanted him to get up and walk and the kid wanted to get flipped, which made it even funnier. LOL. But they are all a riot.
