I really think there's a huge bowl of coke backstage in the dressing rooms of the guests....
Keep it in the back of your head next time you're watching Goldie Hawn remembering the name of one of her own movies, or watch Cameron Diaz and Kathy Griffin laugh there asses of about absolutley nothing.
Not passing judgement here, just an observation :)
I came on here with the same thing in mind; good to see I'm not the only one.
Some guests are off their minds on drugs & it shows. This is where this show suffers & Alan Carr's excels.
Goldie looked like she'd just had botox & it had gone wrong. I love her movies but she gets too intense while telling a story & sadly just isn't very funny.
I wish they'd stop re-using ideas they've already used when they do the internet thing - we've already seen the kids exam answers one, plus they've shown the Cats that look like Hitler twice too.
I'm such an innocent I never notice these things! But I have read Paul O'Grady complaining about guests off their head on drugs recently. I'm going to keep an eye out now, I see what you mean about yesterday though.
I read that article with Paul O'Grady. It was understandable how furious he used to get when he was forced to be show an interest in whatever some disrespectful coked-up guest was promoting.
Graham Norton is great but it wouldn't surprise me if he feels the same, it's hard not to notice it sometimes. Plus some if his guests are pure mediocrity, like when they have to call on Ed Byrne for the 10th time when someone pulls out.
Coke neither makes one forgetful nor laugh inappropriately. It just heightens one's senses, for a brief time, and makes one talk a load of crap and want to be the centre of attention. But memory loss and/or laughter....neither of these things.
Could it just be that Norton is a genius when it comes to interviewing celebs and gets the best out of them? Goldie Hawn, I admit, was just awkward. She wasn't funny, it felt forced and was just telling stories that had NOTHING to do with anything else they had been talking about. I feel like that some of his American guests he has on the show feel the need to tell him well-planned and well-rehearsed 'talk show stories' and aren't used to the 'relax and enjoy'-type of talk show Norton has. Compare Reese Whiterspoon's first appearance on Graham Norton and the one she did a year later. Massive difference! In the first one she seems embarrassed and shocked by what is going on around her. On her second appearance she gets it, seems more relaxed and goes along with it.
However, alcohol does make you laugh and makes you forgetful! And the wine on the show is MORE than obvious! The guests and Graham drink the whole while! Got to imagine that there's more flowing in the greenroom!
Mark was totally toasted alright! but I think this particular episode was one of the most brilliant of Graham's and I happen to think Graham is the best talk show host ever.
I was astonished by the honestly of the lass in the middle and the synergy between the Mark and Michael Fassbender. Fassbender finally got a chance to speak and his unexpectedly Irish accent was just as gorgeous as him, and he did not resent Mark being a sloshed over-sharer. Whew, thought Mark was never going to make it to the end of any of his stories, but he did indeed.
I felt sorry for Mark's wife, who he called "conservative" while looking resigned and bored, on international television - I bet he got it when she saw the show.
I think all these guests hooked into the Graham Norton vibe and the floodgates of honesty opened up, but with no malice to speak of. Kind of like a improv session.
Graham's comments are always just so apt and I love that he really knows a lot about all of his guests, he never fakes that, and he never disrespects anyone or talks to them like they are their public image/movie character only and yet he is mischievously funny, but not at anyone's expense.
I agree Michaela...Mark was an ass. I found nothing interesting in his hogging all the time with his borish behaviour. It is incredibly rude for anyone to continuously interrupt others then tell them to continue only to interrupt them again. I found him quite tedious.
I would be interested in seeing what Graham said about him though.

I agree that this episode was great. Graham is an excellent host as well, he seemed to handle Mark pretty well and with a smile on his face even though I'm sure he was pissed. Other talk show hosts would not have handled it as gracefully.
Also, I'm sure Mark's wife won't be happy about the "conservative" comment, but even worse, his constant flirting and fondling of Sarah. But of course who can blame him, she did look very pretty.
"I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel -but I am, so that's how it comes out."

Alcohol though? Absolutely. It loosens people up. Part of the reason the show is so entertaining is the guests are relaxed and seem to have fun with the interview.
Hell you even see them drinking right there on the couch. And it's embarrassing that Americans can't hold their liquor. Mark Wahlburg, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, all come to mind
