Based on?
I've never read any of the Edgar Rice Burroughs stories. Is this movie based on any of his work or have they crafted their own story?
If you see a message from me, read my biography first before making a post. Thanks!

Some of the flashbacks cover parts of the first book, and there are other callbacks to ERB's novels but for the main part it's a "new" Tarzan adventure.
That said, IMHO it's the most "true to the books" Tarzan I have seen. Many people will insist that "Greystoke" wears that particular crown, though.
No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering.share

Yes there are numerous references to various parts from within the 24 books. Opar is a recurring setting, he has a close relationship to one particular tribe which show up often, references to the difference between gorillas and 'mangani' apes, the leopard men, outsiders seeking the diamonds and treasures of Opar,... so yes there are many elements from the books.
Just don't go in thinking you are familiar with Tarzan if you only have knowledge of the old Tarzan serials or Disney cartoon. Those are so much less Tarzan than this was but I still prefer Legend of Greystoke with Christopher Lambert.
Also, there was almost no reason for Samuel L Jackson to be in this other than drawing power of his name but since he is in nearly everything nowadays, even that has little effect.
