Which Almodovar film do you most hope this emulates in tone?

I think Almodovar is amazing on account of his progression from abrasive John Waters like protestant cinema to a more mature, and far more emotional film making, like that of All about my mother. Would you prefer a return to Women on the Verge hollywood melodrama, or a continuation of the serious films like Talk to Her? Personally I'd like to see another light film from Almodovar, his comedies are very underated...and I think politically the worlds overdue for some satirical cinema from Almodovar.

La Mala Educacion

Todo Sobre mi Madre, if not, every movie except la mala educación. that's the only movie of Almodóvar that I don't like.

Volver. But I don't think Almodovar is able to do better than this masterpiece.

I personally loved Hable con ella, Todo sobre mi madre, and Volver....however, didn't he say something about how Volver ended the "cycle" of women's films?

He said it's all in your head, and I said, so's everything--
But he didnt get it.

I love all of his films, although my favourites at the moment are Volver and Bad Education.

I'd love it if he got Penélope to play a villainess, much like Gael Garcia Bernal's fiendish character in Bad Education.

Whichever direction Almodovar's latest film goes in, I'll bet it'll be great anyway.

Maturity. The very staple of the IMDb message boards.

Talk to her! ... or live flesh.

I think most Almodóvar fans haven't seen his early work. I agree with OP, it does bring John Waters to mind (in a good way, because I can't help loving both men). When looking at the body of his work you can really appreciate the later films, because they reflect his emansipation as a creative person and a storyteller.

I haven't heard much about this film, but I'm hoping it would be on a par with Matador, Todo sobre mi madre and Hable con ella as I think they are the true masterpieces of his career. My personal favourite is Tacones Lejanos, maybe less appreciated but a gem nonetheless.

Enjoyable as most of his films are I think Almodóvar got too personal and lost his perspective with La mala educación. Also, the lacklustre and overrated Gael Garcia Bernal was a miscast and couldn't deliver. Volver was another low point. I like to think someone else (maybe Susan Seidelman) had taken notes from Almodóvar and directed the film while the master himself was not available. It looked well enough on the surface but something was missing. The earthy robust presence and the love for his characters (warts and all) is the essence of Almodóvar and is the reason we love his films.

Something along the lines of Volver which was funny, emotional, dramatic, suspenseful. But then again, all of his films are like that. lol
