Completely unecessary scene

I have the belief that every scene in every movie must have a reason for being there, and not just to fill some time. What was the necessity of the drug overdose of the DJ? Ok,he accidentaly took a strong drug,he went to the hospital,he survived,so what???

But that was necessary for being alone at home and start to talk. That was the real beginning of the film, when Harry starts talking about Lena and the past in the dark room. I just think that Diego appears so vulnerable when he wakes up next to Harry, a bit like dissapointed with his mother and his life. After waking up, he is talking to Harry in a such solemn and sad way, as if he took that drug because of his void life or something. You know, not a "sinner" at all.
I think is very tender, when Harry/Mateo tells Diego he will sign that Vampires script, and Diego makes a big silence smile, full of hope.
In addition, the first time Diego's friend offers drug to him, Diego says no, cause he has to work next day in that script: we could understand that drugs are not necessary when he is excited with other things, this time, involving Mateo. And then at the end of the film Mateo/Harry tells Judith he doesn't want Diego to work on that dump place never again.
Almodovar wanted to show Diego as a nice but lost boy, because of the lack of father, maybe, so the drug overdose was truely intentional.
