I love almovodar...but I don't think I get this one

What was the point? I enjoyed the movie but I'm not sure why...maybe I just love Pedro's style so much that he can't make a movie that doesn't have several moments that I absolutely adore...but, for a film that felt a little slow at points (a first in an almovodar film for me) , certain things seemed underdeveloped...

Anyone out there who loved it and could explain what the movie meant to them?

Even the most primitive society has an innate respect for the insane.

I think it was kind of open-ended. Like, who really killed Lena, Ernesto or Judit? And why does Mateo change his name from "white" "gift from god" to "hurricane", and then back again? Blindness is cliche, it's true, but how much is his character blind to?

In my opinion I saw it as a film of rebirth. Mateo died in a sense when Lena died on that unfortunate night. That his body was still alive was meaningless, he couldn't live as Mateo knowing that Lena wasn't still around. This though, i think was obvious. With Ernesto Jr. saying that he wanted to destroy the memory of his father, in a way, I think that's an epicenter for the progress of the movie, Ernesto Martell's death was the freeing moment needed to bring back old memories, confront demons, and set the soul free. It was a journey, though Harry Caine lived a good life, with close people, he wasn't close, he was still lost. He was the blind writer, instead of the writer that was blind. His world had become simply his acts. It was his closeness with Diego, his decision to open up, the catharsis that breeded ressurection. Ressurection breeded new opportunity, and you get the end of the movie that you get.

I haven't seen any other Almodovar film but have ordered several after seeing this one--I took my aunt and my mother to see it. I was personally quite taken. The theme of resseruction, catharsis, and second chances just seemed so poignant and wonderful to me.

@Writer01603
I liked what you wrote there. Judith tells the doctor that Mateo Blanco, the real name, was a director. And now he is blind, he can only be Harry Cane, the alter ego he was using by now in a funny way (harry caine = hurricane), but now he will use it to forget he could see in the past. Writers can be blind, directors don't.

And after I read your post, I realised that, even if I liked the film, I feel that it could have been better with a more developed and played Mateo's role. I don't see this actor working as a frustrated man suffering from the past. Maybe it's Almodovar's fault, he said he wanted to show a mature man still enjoying life (having sex with the blonde girl, talking about blowjobs in that vampires script...) I think the catharsis would have worked better if he was still suffering in some way. And we don't see him suffering. Ok, it was... 14 years ago? Maybe not a catharsis then. I dont know, I still see Mateo a bit cold, even not as an intelligent man. I don't see the chemistry between he and Lena.

You can watch Bad Education, the same actor plays a rough role. Maybe not a film to watch with your mom and aunt btw.
