Barely Playing In NYC

Absolutely loved the movie, but I'm surprised by what a limited release it's gotten at least here. Right now it's only playing in two cinemas in all of New York, with no indication if it will ever open wider. I went to one showing and the line went down the block! Whole shows were sold out! It was very refreshing to see an international film getting the attention normally given to Spider-Man.

Shame on Sony Pictures Classics! They really underestimated the fanbase; even people who don't know Almodovar are still attracted to a movie starring Penolope. I remember Bad Education also barely got a release, but at least that film was controversial while this one is pretty mainstream.

It's called platform releasing and it has been happening for about fifty years.

Award winning film candidates open at limited theatres for the holidays in hopes the will still be around when the awards start pouring in around January and then go wider.

This is "platform releasing" to an extreme, dude. Precious is also an Oscar contender, and it's playing in a lot more than two theatres. Last year Slumdog Millionaire and Milk may have been Oscar hopefuls, and they both played in megaplexes during the holiday season (which is when I saw both. This is more than limited.

But the difference is--"Precious" is, after all an American film (funded by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry). "Broken Embraces" is a foreign film.
