Chicas y Maletas

Anyone else laugh at how seriously they were taking this supposed comedy? I laughed when they read the reviews and also when Harry's agent broke the news to him that they...gasp...USED THE WRONG TAKES when rediting his film in order to sabotage his career! I just...couldn't take that seriously at all. Comeo on Pedro. You can do better than that.

If it was at least a drama that mirrored their real life affair I could understand but this looked like a throwaway romantic comedy. Garbage like The Back Up Plan.

Chicas y Maletas is basically a remake of Pedro Almodovar's critically acclaimed earlier film 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown'. Hardly a throwaway romantic comedy.

I don't agree at all. The scene at the end proves how hilarious the film would have been, and I'm still dying to know who was at the door. After only seeing 5 minutes of 'Ladies & Luggage' I would totally pay to see it in a theatre. Seems less of a romantic comedy & more of a comedic thriller.

I assumed that it was the same people who were at the door in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, namely, the couple who were interested in the apartment.

Never seen that film, it's on my list, but thanks for ruining it... lol

The DVD has several deleted scenes, including the continuation of Chicas y Maletas from this point, which answers that question. It's a good scene, though I readily understand why they had to cut it to keep Chicas from taking over the whole film.

I think that just the use of Chicas and Maletas shows the genius of Almodovar. It seems that his need to finish and perfect the film with the right takes makes and by ending with a clip from Chicas and Maletas leaves the viewer wanting to know what happens next, what is the denouement. And for that, they'd have to watch his other classic Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

SPOILER: While watching this film, it was obvious to me that "Chicas y Maletas" had been sabotaged. Even in Spanish, I could tell that version was a bad take.

But I was thinking that the film was SO bad that it was good. It would start showing at midnight movies, get a cult following and become a big hit. That would have been funnier and better revenge on Ernesto Sr. than having Mateo re-edit (zzzzzz).

when you see "Chicas...", and if you know Almodovar's work you instantly know that is the same movie that "Mujeres...." and you also know that not only is an excelllent film, is also the first big worldwide succes of Pedro. So in a way you expect that the movie "Chicas..." will be great.

Going back to the original post - both Mateo and Lena were putting a lot at risk doing the film.

Just because it was comedy doesn't mean it wasn't hard work or didn't mean a lot to them. His reputation was on the line and her shot at stardom has been nipped in the bud.

Never mind the fact while filming it they were falling in love and being spied upon, which all adds to the emotions and eventual tragedy, regardless of the subject matter of the film they were making.
