Nowhere as Good As His Earlier Works

When I first saw this movie, I heralded it as completely breath taking and beautiful, then, I watched, Volver, Live Flesh, matador, Bad Education, and the rest of the films that were still in print in America, and I was taken aback by the excellence of these films, the pure entertainment, and as I watch Broken Embraces, though I still consider it astonishing, still a top movie of 2009, I find myself thinking that it just didn't rank with the rest of his films. Maybe it's me, but people always seem to have a very difficult time with flashbacks in films.

Still though, it's a great film that everyone should see if they haven't already.

The middle section of 'Los Abrazos Rotos' is stunning. The rest of it is quite good, but not nearly as good as Almodovar's previous works (All About My Mother, Matador, Talk to Her, Volver, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown etc).
Still, this doesn't mean that the film is average, I agree. It's a spectacular film, I love the noir-ish atmosphere, the spectacular performances by Cruz and Portillo, the stunning cinematography, art direction and costumes and the brilliant script. A film within a film, influences by other films-along with Almodovar ones. It is a highlight in 2009. Actually there are 4 foreign language films which were miles better than 95% of the English language ones that year (A Prophet, The White Ribbon, The Secret in their Eyes and Broken Embraces).
