...made the whole finale all about their characters. I mean, Gavin and Stacey had huge news, but that was given zilch attention. I think the whole of series three would've benefited greatly if the Smithy/Nessa plotline was given more space to breathe.

But then it would have been "Smithy & Nessa" not "Gavin & Stacey".

it should be smithy and nessa, ask anyone who they prefer and they will say neil and vanessa
