I've been wondering the same thing. I've seen every episode thus far, so I'm quite sure I haven't missed anything. Does anyone know if what happened will be revealed in future episodes?

reply

I've read somewhere, in an interview with Smithy and Nessa, that we're never going to find out exactly what happened on the fishing trip.

Knowing Bryn, it was something trivial he's blown out of all proportion and IMO, has nothing to do with any sexual advances towards his nephew.

What? Why?... Not the Phantom Menace?

According to Jason, Bryn didn't do anything wrong. (He says so at the wedding reception.) Most people seem to think that Jason accidentally found Bryn masturbating.

ROFL! I hope so! That would be so funny and it would make sense because, to me, it seems they are alluding to the conclusion that Bryn tried to hook up with Jason and .... , he is family ... so if in fact Bryn was, um, tickling his own fancy and got busted... then

I disagree with this.

In the series 1 finale, which is episode six, during the wedding reception when Bryn is off by himself, Jason approaches him and tries to make him feel better about the awkwardness between them. He says Bryn shouldn't be embarassed by what happend because it's not wrong and lots of people do it. He then tells Bryn that he's a great man and a great uncle. I don't think Jason would have said ANY of those things if Bryn had been making inappropriate sexual overtures toward Jason during the fishing trip.

That line made me second guess my assumption. Before that I was thinking the awkward silences were because of something bad.

It was something Bryn had done and Jason saw, although we automatically think it might have a sexual connotation which involves Jason and Bryn. I highly doubt anything inappropriate happened between the two. A. Its Disgusting B. Bryn doesnt seem the type to do something like that. C. Jason would obviously have been angry or not even attempt to reconcile.

Like what was said before, it was probably something stupid that was blown out of proportion.

I don't think the writers have actually decided that they have done anything. They just mention it every now and then but add bits on. Dave said in one episode that it "defied gravity". I think they are going to let this run and run, haha.

reply

Having something serious happen would just not be in tone with the series overall and certainly not with Bryn's gentle nature. The writers said they hadn't decided yet what it was but I guess it will be something like using the wrong kind of bait of catching a fish that is not in season.

reply

Defied gravity, eh? Maybe Bryn tried to give himself fellatio? lol. Yikes

In the Christmas special (which I'm just watching on BBC America), Bryn, Jason and Dave are in the kitchen. Bryn said, "We're going to talk about it now. It was so cold and when it's that cold . . ." and then they were interrupted. So my guess is that they shared a sleeping bag and spooned to stay warm. But it's possible that the writers deliberately introduced contradictions in the story.

reply

so did we learn anything in te 3rd season?

reply

I know I'm a bit late, but I just finished the third season. Also in the Christmas special when Jason and Bryn are drinking milk, both of them say that whatever it was that happened was legal in THAT country.

So apparently it's something illegal in some places and not in others, which led me to believe that maybe Jason caught Bryn doing something with another guy (sodomy is illegal in some places and not in others), but then they say it was cold. I don't want to believe that anything happened like that between Bryn and Jason because they are nephew and uncle.

reply

I just did a full series marathon and the Xma$ Special is the closest they've come to saying what really happened.

What do I think happened?
We know Bryn and Jason were on a fishing trip. It got colder than they had expected and they decided to share sleeping bag (or possibly one forgot or ruined theirs? re: soup). At some point in the night, Bryn wound up spooning Jason and inadvertently popped some hard "gravity defying" wood. (Guys, you know what I'm talking about.) Jason was apparently embarrassed for his uncle, but may not have really minded being gay. Bryn, however, is still in denial and the fact it happened with his beloved brother's (rest his soul) son made it doubly embarrassing for him.

Bryn later reveals to Jason he only told Dave by accident, when a casual "you alright mate?" made him spill his guts. Having Bryn's guilt over the matter complicating things, and Dave getting this version made it seem worse than what really may or may not have happened.

At some point, the story got to the rest of the family and that is what Jason is embarrassed about, adding to Bryn's unease.

If anything, I want to know if anything happened between Bryn and Budgie (Russell Tovey). Their pairing had to be intentional, what with Russell being an openly out actor. (I don't know/care about if "Bryn" is in RL.) Just another running gag with Bryn being DEEP in the closet, especially as he's still going on about "missing his boys" several weeks (and eps) later.

hopefully we never find out, cause it just wouldnt be as funny as it is now.

reply

If you watch the DVD extras, Ruth Jones and James Corden both say nothing happened

even they don't know themselves.

So if the writers don't know then we will never find out!
