Agree...that "innocent" would not be the correct word to describe Gale.
I think people would not feel too bad about him getting shot, if it were by the father of a kid that OD'd on Gales crystal. But that wasn't the case. He was killed as a by-product of Walt & Jesse's actions (though they stemmed from the use of a kid helping to sell drugs).
Gale described his take on his job, when he told Walt that people ("discerning adults") were going to get their meth one way or another, so he might as well make the best. Which is actually true, but doesn't justify cooking meth - he'd go to jail for a long time if caught...just not likely as long as Gus would. Appears Gale didn't connect his role in producing meth, with responsibility of getting junkies hooked, or even worse, kids.
But if you take the approach that, no matter what, guys like Gus will always be able to find someone to cook meth...then why not me - expect that's how Gale felt, as well as Walt. In fact, Skyler seemed pretty used to the idea thru S5, as she stashed Walt's regular money drop offs. Not saying this is OK - but more than one person broke bad in this show.
