I enjoyed Martin Freeman's Bilbo

The first time I saw it in cinemas, but in every subsequent viewing his interpretation of Bilbo has become more annoying.

I think there is too much of his own personality in the role and it's more of him being himself dressed as Bilbo, rather than him trying to embody the character who was written.

Everyone else was pretty well cast.

So you enjoyed it, and then you didn’t. Is that a fair summary?

It was an abomination of Tolkien’s book, as were the 2 turds that followed it.

Freeman did a great job as Bilbo, in my opinion, partly because he's got that perfect "British Everyman" down so well. His Arthur Dent was great for the same reason.

The films overall were very, very mixed-bags, and could only be salvaged by withering edits.

I liked him in the film. He did show Bilbo's development from an over pampered gentleman to a warrior.
