Decent gangster films

How about a list?

Here's a couple of British ones:

- Sexy Beast (Kingsley ought to have won every available award for this one. He is honestly the greatest living actor today).
- Gangster No. 1 (Paul Bettany redefines the genre. David Thewlis is excellent).
- Layer Cake (The film that got Craig Bond. Michael Gambon is sublime here).
- Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Guy Ritchie film, pretty good).
- Get Carter (Michael Caine - need more be said?).
- The Long Good Friday (with Helen Mirren!)

There really don't seem to have been many American ones that were much good. The standouts are:

- The Godfather, and The Godfather II.
- Once Upon A Time In America.
- Gangs of New York.
- The Departed.

The Departed ( American remake of Infernal Affairs )

Which one? The Paul Muni (original) or the Al Pacino (remake) version?
I liked both. Obviously the production values of the more recent Pacino version are higher but the original had its own strengths.
I recommend you watch both and decide for yourself.
