The Finger Chopper (spoiler)
Did anyone else not buy "The Weird" as the Finger Chopper. Especially the part about him defeating "The Bad" in combat. Didn't fit his character, nor does he seem physically capable of defeating Chung-Li.

True, but he was obviously the less-skilled of the three and he just didn't seem to be the sort of guy who would chop peoples' fingers off. He might've been a criminal, but he wasn't sadistic.

He went to Manchuria to get away from the finger chopper image.
To me he didn't come across less skilled at all and if you think about it he wasn't very nice throughout the movie I mean he killed the most people when he robbed the train (including waitresses) and he didn't flinch when using the dynamite.
I'm not too sure about whether he was "physically capable", but the Finger Chopper twist does reek a little of audience manipulation. It looks as though they felt they had to throw that in to make the audience feel less sympathetic towards The Weird during the final shootout.
It harks back to The Good, The Bad & The Ugly I guess. You feel quite sympathetic towards Tuco and Eastwood is such a badass that you don't feel that The Ugly is in any real danger... The Finger Chopper twist was their way of shaking up the finale.
The only thing I didn't really like about The Good, The Bad, The Weird. Shame 'cos the rest was freakin' awesome...
There were several hints that the Weird was the Finger Chopper in the movie. There was the very obvious flashback by Chang-yi and the fact that he seemed very fixated on getting Taegu (and not the map) even though he's supposedly just a petty thief. Taegu laughs in a manner very out of character (sad and bitter) when Dowon tells him about the Finger Chopper, and even mentions that that's not the Finger Chopper he knows.
And despite his goofy mannerisms, he managed to beat 4+ Manchurian soldiers, escape from Chang-yi's gangs in the train, survive the ambush by Byungchoon's bandits, survive the fights against Chang-yi's gangs again, escapes the opium den, survive the gigantic chase by everyone, AND win the Mexican standoff at the end. Plus, another clue is that the guy who tells Chang-yi where Taegu is (the one that gets his mouth cut open) say that no one who confronted Taegu lived, and that Taegu always somehow survives.
AND Chang-yi freaks out and kills one of his men when he says that he heard that Taegu is the best fighter in Manchuria.
Numerous clues, though understandably not caught on by most audiences since this isn't exactly a deep, thinking-man's mystery piece.
Everything you said bumfromkorea pretty much sumed it up.

I was surprised, but it made sense to me. He has some real quick reflexes. Certainly, one can't assume The Bad was always so great with a gun... it could've been something that's been built up over the years while trying to get his revenge.
The Weird got out of every dangerous situation! I don't think its hard to believe, considering how amazing he was in that last chase scene.
shareIn the end of the opium-house scene he barely survives while fighting the dealer and only thanks to the kids. That pretty much indicates that the final twist was there just for the sake of having a twist.Still a very entertaining movie.
shareDoes no one here watch anime? Trigun anyone, its a classic cliche or stock character if you will to have a God level skilled character act like a buffon even in the worst situations. I actually suspected he was finger chopper when Bad's man asked what really happened.
Or i Guess if you dont watch anime, Usual Suspects comes to mind.

The movie doesn't even have a complex enough plot to conjure 50 plot-holes, so get off it.

It's not complex. It's got subtlety plot points. And is really fun.
But the lack of complexity doesn't stop the film from having some plot holes.
It was a little hard to buy, but at the same time I found it to be an interesting twist.
Also, another hint "The Weird" is a little more than he seems is when "The Bad" is questioning a thug and the thug says something like "you will never kill him, no one goes up against him and lives"
It's not meant to be taken too seriously. I thought the same thing, like when everyone is chasing him on horseback and he's on the motorcycle. There's no way he should've survived that but then I thought wait, this whole movie is ridiculous. That doesn't stop it from still being a pretty cool movie.
Are you the clown?
No, I'm Mary *beep* Poppins.
