overrated director.

after watching this film, he is not the same level as Park chan-wook,Bong joon-ho ,kim ki-duk or Hong sang-soo... I think Lee myung-sae is better stylist than him.
fundamentally weak..

You do not like Kim Jee-woon? Ok, none of my business.

Park Chan-wook, Bong joon-ho and Kim Ki-duk are great directors. No question.

But Hong Sang-soo? Hah! "Bam gua nat" was the most boring and uninteresting movie I've ever seen on the big screen. And Lee Myung-sae is a great stylist but a lousy storyteller.

Have you ever seen A Bittersweet Life or A Tale of Two Sisters? pffff

I'm not entirely familiar with Korean directors. But The Host and Memories of A Murder were not as good as GBW or A Bittersweet Life, so I have to disagree Bong Joon-Ho being better.

As for Park Chan-Wook. Yes, well. He made the Vengeance Trilogy. You might as well say Robert Wiene isn't worth his salt because he doesn't measure up to Lang or Murnau. Rather high standards.

Memories of Murder's better then all of them, but Quiet Family comes close

You shouldn't judge Kim Ji Woon with the Good, the Bad, the Weird. He wasn't aiming to make a deep, serious film - he just wanted to make a fun, exciting action movie for a change. A Tale of Two Sisters is way up there in my book along with Park Chan Wook's "Vengeance trilogy" + "JSA", Bong Joon Ho's "Memories of Murder", Hong Sang Soo's "The Day a Pig Fell into the Well", and Kim Ki Duk's ... every movie he has ever made. You also forgot Lee Chang Dong (Oasis, Peppermint Candy, and Secret Sunshine) ;). A Bittersweet Life wasn't that bad either (I actually think that movie is a bit overrated).

And you are out of your mind if you think Lee Myung Se has better style than Kim Ji Woon. His movie "Duelist" was the first time I fell asleep during a martial arts film, and that includes any martial arts film Zhang Yimou made.

reply

agree, this is just another "Transformers" type of film for the Korean. Nothing deep, serious but I am sure it gathers a lot of money :D

AZN!!!

Great post bumfromkorea. Good to hear yo mention Kim Ki duk and Lee Chang Dong too. I think Woon is more of a visual stylist than some of the other terrific Korean directors, but he is also the most versatile, and "The Foul Kikng" is a terrific movie that everyone should check out.

I was disappointed with A Bittersweet Life, as it was a little bit too much style over substance, but as a follow-up to Two Sisters that's understandable.

Did you understand A Bitter Sweet Life (im not trying to be argumentative) I find it surprising that you would say that when In fact the movie is so deep. Again not being a jerk im wondering?

If I was baing my opinion on this director purely on The Good The Bad Teh Weird I'd agree that he isn't all that great. A Bittersweet Life is very good and I Saw The Devil is excellent so I know he's capable of much better. I haven't got round to Watching A Tale of Two Sisters yet.

reply

I agree.

I don't know Hong Sang-soo or Lee Myung-sae, but Park Chan-wook, Bong Joon-ho and Kim Ki-duk are better both in terms of execution and style. And they are infinitely more gifted at establishing and nuancing the character development and the narrative. It's not completely the case of The Good, the Bad, the Weird, but in A Bittersweet Life and I Saw the Devil he basically intercuts over-the-top action and violence scenes with pure melodrama. It is fun to watch, sure, but I found it hard to care both for the characters or the story.

The other three, particularly Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho, you can actually see they spent the time to make sure that the over-the-top action is balanced in equal measure by the amount of f_cks we give for the characters and the plot. The drama and the interaction between characters are more carefully composed and tasteful. Their worst films are still, in my opinion, better than Kim Jee-woon's best. Although I may be a little biased when it comes to Bong Joon-ho, since I think his four films are either masterpieces or near-masterpieces.

This being said, I haven't seen A Tale of Two Sisters yet, nor his earlier two films, so this opinion only concerns his three latest films.

Language! The thing that means stuff.
