Explanation of the very ending

"The Good" at the table asks where "The Weird" is and then proceeds to shoot everyone. The final scene is him riding into the desert. Was "The Weird" killed by the dynamite and then why is "The Good" in the desert or did he simply find out he had died and returned to his bounty hunting life?

Thanks in advance.

reply

No, no, no.

The person you see riding the motorcycle at the end is "THE WEIRD".

He spent the bounty and cash that "THE BAD" brought to the shoot-out, and bought snazzy new clothing, a new biker's cap and goggles, and a brand new Motorcycle.

If you notice that right before "THE GOOD" enters the bar/lounge and kill's the thugs for info on "THE WEIRD", he watches as "THE BAD's" wanted poster is exed out because he's dead, and the old poster of "THE WEIRD" has been replaced by a new one because "THE WEIRD" has upped his game, and has essentially become the snazzy bad-ass that "THE BAD" was.

So it's "The Weird" at the end driving through the desert to get away.

reply

Thanks very much that makes sense. I just was not sure who was on the motorcycle at the end. Obliged.

reply

Wait what what what??? What you guys are talking about is nothing like my ending! The ending I saw was all three (Good, Bad and Weird) laying in the desert following the shoot-out, and the liquid (sh*t?) that sprayed out from the ground. And then it just turns black. Did I get a different ending?!

reply

Liquid *beep* It's crude oil, dude.

And lol, yes, you missed the ending. There's a few minutes right after that part when the screen goes black. Weird wakes up and reveals he had a steel plate under his shirt and Good is gone. Bad is dead.

Weird then finds the diamonds Bad was carrying (from the safe) and becomes a high profile outlaw (bounty goes up). The film ends with Good looking for Weird's whereabouts.

reply

I just saw the movie and the ending was a bit different than what I´ve read here.

The good , the bad and the weird are laying on the ground.
Then the screen goes black followed by the names of the actors and the
title.
Then it goes straight to the scene where they write on the bads
wanted poster and put up a new one of the weird. And from there
the shot of weird on the bike and then the good on his horse.

So I missed when the weird reveals the steel plate and him takin the money
and diamonds.

reply

Definite:
That's the ending I just saw, too. I didn't see any steel plate scene. Is Netflix gypping me?

Thanks for the consensus that Weird was on the bike @ the end; that's what I thought, too.

reply

LOL yes Netflix gypped you big time!

Go to youtube and type in the title of the movie, then under search options choose playlist. You will find that youtube has the full, proper subtitled movie that has the real ending.

Plus the original actors are great to hear.

reply

Looked for the full movie on youtube but it wasn't there.

It's right here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQJw0IrQnh0&feature=PlayList&p=F63D15145D2937EA&index=0&playnext=1

I just watched this today....GREAT movie!

On the U.S. blu-ray (at least the one I rented) it fades to black and then starts at a close-up of the wanted poster where the Bad Guy's face is "X'd" out and the bounty goes up on the Weird.

Then (if I recall...already returned it) it shows the Good walking away & cuts away to somebody on a motorcycle.

Based on this I assumed the Good is obviously still alive based on the boots (can't see his face) and there is no proof the Weird is alive other than a Wanted poster that shows the bounty going up in price.

I'm glad I read this post to see how he survived a shot to the chest. I'll probably buy this on Blu-Ray when I can get it for $10 or under and hope that it has deleted scenes or the director's cut???

I think it's an interesting twist. The roles from the beginning you expect everyone to be, suddenly change and in the end there are no good, bad or weird. *beep* nihilism!

Think the ending sums up the dialog and plot very good. Maybe I overanalyse it, but it really blow me away and made me think the whole movie through and fit all the pieces together. Besides of having interessting charactars, actionscenes and locations. It also had an philosophical appeal with it's story and dialogue.

Also loved that map blew away in a desertwind asuming that their will be more treasurehunters maybe coming. Or something else? I really think this movie appeals to everyones subjective imagination. They who lack it maybe dont like the movie (not saying everyone).

Sorry for my pore english.

reply

Yes the map flying into the little whirlywind was a beautiful touch.

You can still find it on youtube if you type in the title and "full movie" to see this ending they are talking about. It's non subtitled and in Korean though so you'll have to do some guesswork as to what is said.

Just to confirm, the Netflix version IS the short crappy ending that doesn't explain anything unless you are a detective/Sherlock Holmes.

I never saw in any ending that the weird (tae-goo) took the loot other than the diamonds from the bad's pocket when he was inexplicably jamming dynamite in his pockets (there were no subtitles, I don't speak Korean). If anyone knows what he was saying to the bad that would be helpful.

The other part, where the good has a shootout with some thugs, I can only guess he was looking for the weird or perhaps collecting a bounty on the guy he didn't kill.

All in all I was a bit disappointed with the movie because I didn't really get a true understanding. I am a huge foreign film fan, especially of the Asian variety, but I find that this often happens. Either the meanings are sometimes lost to me or they just suck at making movies in the western style.

***spoilers for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Titanic (James Cameron version) - DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THEM!***
Japanese directors/writers are notorious for crappy meaningless films. My fiance and I often joke as we watch Japanese movies that no happy ending ever happens, one of the two lovers will die horribly, or something else. It's basically Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, or the Titanic in almost every Japanese movie, I swear.

reply

There must be another version out there- I rented it and I got the one without the wake-up scene.

reply

Not only that, but NETFLIX holds it's rep for having consistently bad/error-prone descriptions and details. Seriously, I believe they write their movie descriptions based on box-art alone or some 14-iteration word-of-mouth from middle-school kids.

In this case, NETFLIX says the film is in English with no sub-titles, but it's the exact opposite. It's NOT in English, and it's ALL subtitles!

reply

The same thing happened to me. Just wait a little after the credits and you'll see the real ending.

reply

There were two alternate endings. The Korean ending had the Good and the Weird surviving. I just saw the one that showed they survived but it DIDN'T have the protective armor reveal -- that would've been helpful. The other ending (as I understand it) ended with the oil erupting behind the lifeless bodies.

reply

I have scene both endings and actually prefer the shorter one. I just like the pause. You think everyone is dead. Then credits stop and the chase continues.

reply

I really liked that ending too, though I have to say that it was also good to see the weird get back in character after the shootout, displaying the metal plate and with the dynamite scene and the japanese soldiers surrounding him. The part after the bounties being shown of the good trying to extract information I found a little unnecessary though. But both endings are very good in my opinion anyways.

reply

generally, netflix streaming has weirdly edited versions of stuff.

reply

Netflix has the international version which removes the metal plate scene, making the epilogue seem pointless.
The Korean version includes this scene and makes the rest of the story coherent.

reply

yep, same here, after short credit roll, it's the wanted poster being written over 'dead', 'Good' walks away and 'Weird' is seen riding along the canyon. Still clear and all, but, dang, I hate different endings!

***So I've seen 4 movies/wk in theatre for a 1/4 century, call me crazy?**

reply

Like I said in an older post,I think the best of the three endings is the one appearing right after the first credits. No Weird removing the metal plate and no Good interrogating the thugs in the saloon.Just Do-won watching Tae-Goo's bounty going up,setting out to hunt him and then the final bike scene.I think it was the cooler ending with the best pacing.

reply

Its funny how people lack the ability to pay attention to detail. Despite not seeing the ending with the Steel Plate being pulled out and having taken the diamonds from "the bad", I was still able to take in from the small ending after the character credit role that it is in FACT Park Do-Wan that is staring at the bounty poster to see that Park Chang-Yi has been marked as Dead and that Yoon Tae-Goo has gone up in bounty, then walks away with a smirk as you can tell by the movement in his cheeks.

Also note that as he is walking away, his profile and hair are the same as Park Do-Wan's. It is even he that is riding the bike...seeing as how its the same clothes as the person we JUST saw at the Bounty Board...And again, you can see how skinny he is.

I've been looking for this steel plate ending and can believe it seeing as how Yoon Tae-Goo spared Park's life once already. This just shows that Park is now on an adventure to perhaps use any fortune made off the crude oil well (seeing as how we never got to hear his dream) and that maybe he is off to find Yoon again.

reply

[deleted]

I don't think there is any doubt about who is the one watching the bounty increasing.
In the last scene it is clearly Tae Goo riding the bike. It's only natural given how he is the one character riding a bike in the whole movie and the director wanting to show us the remaining two protagonists' whereabouts. Also their clothes in the end are nothing alike.

reply

Steel plate? Why did they remove the scene I wonder? It's confusing.

reply

You're post is old so you might not read this, but what the heck. There were two endings produced. The ending you describe is the "international" ending, and the one the director originally intended and preferred. The longer ending some other people describe is the one shot and added on for South Korean release, and is a little more 'happy' so to speak. In one, they all die as a result of their issues. In the other the Good and Wierd live on to continue their pursuit.

reply

Oh, so this is the original ending. Seems poor compared to the international, that keeps going after the shootout, with more interesting developments.

reply

Check the korean ending:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoScB3tppX0

reply

w.t.f. just how many endings are out there. in my version 3 of them were lying on the ground. then scene shift towards the wanted board after a few seconds, the bad is dead and the weirds price rises to 3500 won . There is a caped man leaving after taking a sight to the board (he's got very fit body) and the last thing is a man driving a motor.

reply

There's 3 endings (or two, just one is more extended)

The international version has all three dyings, as the crude oil erupts. It works as an ending, leaving it as three men who went on this chase and finally got pursued by their chaser. It's also the ending Kim Ji Woon liked the most.

The Korean version ends with the bit after the credits, with the Bad dead, the Good figuring alive and still hunting, and the Weird alive, driving on his cycle, as his bounty is raised.
Apparently, there's more of an extended bit, showing that how they survived and what happened to the money/goods. That extended stuff, is not what i saw.
And as for the Korean ending, it works as well. It has that openness and some what fulfilling ending to the story.

reply

Just seen the movie. On my Blu Ray there are like 6 endings? The one where they are all dead, then one where they meet, one where the Good buys all kind off stuff etc.

Weird.

reply

well, i'm glad i got the good ending out of the all the possible endings, great film.

Geez, which Blu Ray is this? I just finished the movie and only the ending with the posters & the motorcycle was the only one on it! I have the IFC Films/MPI region A Blu-Ray! I got HOSED man!

The steel plate reveal would've been much better IMO. Wrapped up the movie much nicer!
