when the 'bad' looks up at 'the finger chopper' QT homage?

Possible Tarentino homage?
Did anyone else think the flashback scene at the end where "The Bad" looks up at "The Finger Chopper" was almost like the scene in Kill Bill when "The Bride" is looking up at O-ren Ishii? I mean even the hair was like Lucy Liu's weird cut.
Just wondering.

I wouldn't be surprised. The whole damn movie is a Tarantino homage.

reply

The entire movie is a Sergio Leone homage. Tarantino was inspired by Leone. Hence, so many references in his movies.

Having seen only a few of Leone's movies and having seen all of Tarantino's movies multiple times, yeah, I got a major Tarantino vibe from this even before the chase scene at the end where the background music was the same as something Tarantino used in I think Kill Bill.

Actually that particular shot is straight from Lady Snowblood, not from a Leone movie.

reply

No, everybody has it wrong. Tarantino lifted that shot from the spaghetti western Death Rides A Horse. The hero of that movie has a weird magenta-dissolve flash back everytime he sees one of the four men who murdered his family. Watch and compare that shot with Kill Bill, it's literally the same shot.

Are you sure it's not a Sergio Leone homage, the title being what it is and all?

reply

When the bad kills the old guy at the start its a homage to Terminator 2

reply

Which is funny, because Lee Byung-hun went on to play a T-1000.

TBH, I was thinking "Once Upon a Time in the West" when they did the flashback. Both films have a character who's chasing someone down for revenge, and have a flashback right before a shootout between them.

This film was definitely an ode to Sergio Leone, which is something to really love about this film!

Actually this is entirely Leone homage. And thank you for pointing the finger thing. Lee Van Cleef, the guy who played the Bad in GBU had an accident in which lost the tip of his index finger. Subtle detail but brilliant

people mention Oldboy references, I missed those
