i mean he was under continuous surveillance. he was allowed no visitors. he was not allowed to leave his cell. why on earth was it necessary to check if he smuggled something in? assuming that's what the exam was for.

Actually, that one's easy. Remember Goering during the Nuremburg Trials? He too was under constant surveillance, yet managed to commit suicide the night before his execution. I'm sure the Israelis had that example before their eyes and just decided to have periodic body searches just to be safe.
