What's with all the missing thumbs?

What's with the missing thumbs?? Many people they encountered were missing their thumbs.. I can't think of a good reason why unless it's some sort of punishment.. You would not eat your thumbs as they are kind of important and if you had to eat a finger or two one would start with the little finger as the thumb and index finger are the most useful.

I've seen it theorized somewhere that one's ability to wield a weapon (like a club, knife, or even handgun) is greatly diminished without thumbs. Sort of a way of rendering you harmless.

I really don't know, though.

Now, as to who is carrying out the mutilations, that's wide open to speculation. The book just obliquely hints at the way society starts to morph after the event. Religious cults, warlords, the Great and Powerful Humongous...who can say?

"Morbius, something is approaching from the southwest. It is now quite close."

Seems to make sense. I would believe that. Good reply.

The book only describes the Thief missing all of the fingers one hand, referring to his maimed hand as a "Fleshy spatula". He was most likely banished from a commune.

The Veteran at the end of the movie also has a thumb gone, but this is not mentioned in the novel.

Frostbite?

The thief probably had his thumbs cut off for stealing something. As for the veteran's missing thumb, he probably had it cut off in a fight with someone.

Or it could be that the director was aiming for a more ambiguous ending than the book and hinting that the veteran might not be all he seemed to be; that he's missing a thumb for the same reason as the thief and is not to be trusted.
