This movie touches on interesting topics but just meanders till the end. A glance at this forum finds questions not answered, why Charlize Theron left, why the missing thumbs, etc. It's as if the editing were random.
Charlize's character just gives up, she says as much, that surviving is not enough, she doesn't want to keep struggling. Wandering off is as good a way to commit suicide as any, she's lost all hope and doesn't care anymore, she has nothing to look forward to.
Missing thumbs - I assume you're talking about the thief who takes their cart? I don't remember how but in the book it's implied he was kicked out of a commune for stealing or something and cutting fingers off is a common form or punishment for thieves in many societies, past and present.
I guess it does meander but the purpose of the story is to examine The Man's drive to survive, motivated by the love he has for his son, under unspeakable circumstances. It makes us ask ourselves: would we just give up like Charlize, or carry on like The Man?
