Why didn't the person with the fallout shelter actually USE it?

Was the scene with the house with the full fallout shelter supposed to just be ironic because here someone had planned and made their fallout shelter filled to the brim with everything you'd need to survive and then they seemed to die in bed? From some natural cause I'd guess? Like a heart attack or something? Surely they wouldn't have killed themselves with so much preparation and supplies to keep themselves alive.

Well you can prepare and beat your chest as much as you like about being a survivalist. You read books and watch films about how to survive cataclysims but you're never mentally prepared for a holocaust.

A lot of people "prepare" because it's a hobby, no real notion of having to ever face something truely horrific.

I mean this is more than a tornado, tidal wave or anything anyone has ever faced. In this film there was an event that could end all life or at least all human life. To me there is every chance the person topped themselves.

I thought the exact same thing after reading the book first. They might have thought "..and when I run out of food in the shelter - given the increasing mayhem that's going on - then what?"

reply

It could be any number of reasons. Perhaps they had the bunker as a reserve and were still using supplies in the house when they were attacked or injured or taken ill? Knowing there's no help coming for a serious injury or illness, added to the despair of a completely hopeless world, could easily be incentive to take some pills.

...then whoa, differences...

I thought they didn't use it for the same reason that the mother killed herself. She/they were willing to live if there was light at the end of the tunnel. If there was a major earthquake and power and food was going to be short supply for six months for example, then things would slowly get back to normal. Then use the shelter.

The world is going to be a black hell and stay there forever. I'm out of here.

you're assuming the dead person in the bed was someone that lived on that property.

maybe it wasn't.

reply

Maybe the family was in town, perhaps catching a movie, when the initial event occurred and were trampled in the mayhem that ensued.

The body in the bed is a left behind traveler who was part of a group that stayed a day or two five years ago.
