Any preppers here?

I am a bit of a doomsday prepper. Not all hardcore like some of them. But I could hole up in my basement for several months if I really had to. For me, it's not so much a lifestyle as it is practical. I live on a fixed income and having some extra food around the house just make sense.

I was wondering about the thoughts of other preppers about this film. If something like this happens, my thoughts are to hole up in the basement until everyone outside has killed each other, then come out and see what's what. What would you do?

Having extra food isn't just for world ending events.

A few winters ago our area got so much snow that the grocery store was closed for 4 days.

No one starved because we all know better and keep extra stuff around.

Same here, I was stuck at home for 4 days because the blizzard in New England dropped almost 3 feet of snow on the road, counting the draft. It was over my hood. Took another day to clear it when they plowed it since it was rock hard and about 4.5 feet high. Most of these kids that would talk *beep* about a little prepping is stupid, they're spoiled kids who has mommy and daddy buy them things. I had 40+ gallons of drinking water, 100 lbs of rice, at least 30 canned food, ramen noodles, batteries, candles, charcoal, snacks, juice, and about 4000 rounds of ammunition and 4 guns (2 9mm, 22lr, AR15) during that storm. Nothing wrong with prepping, I'm just not a doomsday prepper, but it's always good to have at least 2 weeks of food just in case.

Nobody is going to starve in four days.

Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

reply

You do know that that little grumble in your tum-tum after a day is a sign of hunger?

Hunger leads to to pain.
Pain leads to suffering.
Suffering leads to the dark side*.

*the dark side meaning; eating people in this case.

If something like this happy, you, me, everyone and everything is completely fugged. Nuclear war leaves no future for mankind, even those with beans in their basement.

I'm going to start, I just got my Ham Radio Technician license I plan on advancing to General and then extra license , it'll be a good tool to have.

Even if I thought it would help, I'm not sure I'd make a very good prepper. My house doesn't have a basement, so I've got nowhere to store those extra cartons of tinned food and other essential items - water, candles, matches, batteries, toilet paper - with which to wait out the anarchy and chaos.

While I don't own a gun, I do have a Swiss Army knife, but the tip of the main blade is broken. Mind you, it still has a good tin opener on it. But of course, that'll only be helpful if you have a decent supply of tinned food in the first place. (Which just leads back to the storage problem.)

Canned food doesn't last that long, and when it goes bad it doesn't just taste funny, it has botulism(the most toxic substance on earth). Foil wrapped, freeze dried food is the way to go(as far as weight, space, shelflife). You will also need lots of water purification ability.
Beyond that can usually be scavenged quite easily.

However, remember that this is what the man and the woman did. They had a child AFTER the apocalypse, and he's around 10 during the majority of this movie. So, they'd lived TEN YEARS in the apocalypse... which is more than your arbitrary 'several months'.

The point being that in this kind of scenario there isn't a 'come up after everyone has killed themselves off'.
