Penny's mom isn't obese

I was re-watching episode 3 of season 5.

Penny eats the last dumpling and out of anger Sheldon says: "I've seen pictures of your mother, keep eating"

Now that we've seen Penny's mom, we know she isn't obese.

Funny to see that the writers didn't think it would get to a place where we would meet her family.

1+1 = you really had to check?

How funny would it have been to have Melissa McCarthy play her mom and rip Sheldon a new one? I love her.

reply

Haha, would have been so much better than the actress who plays her mom now ;)

I do like Katey Sagal, and she played her mom before on a different show. Just exploring the options :-)

Damn did not even notice that, she was Kaley's mom on 8 Simple Rules.... too. Nice catch yosoylalinda1-631-452136.

Well, she could have lost the weight.

"we know she isn't obese"

Do we?

First of all, writers don't think into far future, when they write. They think of 'is this funny or not' (although hard to imagine THIS show's writers having thought of even that far) right now, and that's all.

Second of all, this kind of parent-changing stuff happens a LOT. Look at 'The Office', Pam had at least two completely separate and different moms. Hard to take either of them seriously because of that.

Look at Seinfeld, George's father is supposed to be gay. George is supposed to have a brother. Seinfeld's father is supposed to smoke cigars and do the coam-over and talk funny (Seinfeld does an impression of his supposed father, and it's NOTHING like any of the actors playing the multiple fathers).

Both George and Jerry have multiple fathers (multiple actors playing the father). Some scenes were shot multiple times with different actors, etc. One of George's fathers is pretty much bald.

So when considering all this, is it really surprising something like that happened in this show?

Furthermore, the PICTURES might have had an obese version of the mother, but in real life, she either lost the weight, or wasn't as obese as some PICTURES may have made her look like (because of angle, lighting, etc., who knows)

So maybe it's a bad idea to make this kind of posts before you at least think through all the possibilities, no offence.
