No. They were offered good-sounding jobs in another country and the local recruiter made up fake passports for them to cross the border. Once they got across the border they discovered that they'd have to work off their debt and also that they job they had to do wasn't what they were expecting.
Without a real passport or even a fake one, they can't run away. They are kept in line with the promise that their debt would be paid off within a few months and they'd be set free.
When they hit the point where they thought they'd go free, they were probably shipped off to a hard-core facility and probably died there.
