Why are the Bosnian policemen speaking Romanian?

When Cathy is doing her first assignment, the policemen who are arguing about the case of the abused old woman are speaking Romanian. What's up with that? I know they filmed in Romania and that many of the supporting actors are from there, but it doesn't make sense and, for those of us who can tell the difference, this really takes something away from the accuracy of the movie. Not to mention that the two languages are not even similar...

We have to be realistic, they could have got people in who spoke to correct language, but how many people who are actually going to see this film would know the difference?

reply

I think they thought the same. But with IMDB, it only really takes one person who recognizes the language to blow the whistle :)

Such as me. Totally clueless!

* But I can understand that Bosnians might feel peeved.

reply

Same for me. When I was watching this for the first time I was taken back a second wondering if they were training Romanian peacekeepers or something like this. I totally agree that they should have had people speaking Bosnian. It would be one thing to dismiss it if they were speaking Serbian or Croatian, but Romanian? And they are totally different language families, Latin and Balto-Slavic.

You know what, I mistook me for somebody else.

reply

Even the 'Bosnian' that they were pretending to speak was woeful and almost incomprehensible (except for the repeated word 'brze' (faster!) that seemed like the only word they bothered learning.

How bad was the Bosnian spoken by Raya in the beginning, and by Viko in court? (they are both Romanian actors)

reply

well that explains a lot, i couldn't understand almost anything...shameful really, i hate when american movies do this..i can't believe they couldn't find ANY native speakers or translators, or dub the actors

awful.Especially the judge when he read sentence.

reply

I haven't seen the film, just watched the trailer BUT I did notice the plethora of Romanian actors. Seriously, they couldn't find any Bosnian actors?!? They should have just set the film in Romania, much more accurate.
