I'm confused as to how going to Bosnia for work was supposed to help Kathryn be closer to her daughter in the long run. The only thing I can think of is that she needed the money it would bring, but it didn't seem like money was the issue... What did I miss?

The money was the issue. The father had custody of the daughter and was moving with her to, I think it was Florida. Kathryn was distraught because she wouldn't be seeing her daughter anymore, except perhaps the occasional short visit. Then she was offered $100,000 (worth probably twice that now) for a six month gig in Bosnia, and she jumped at it because it would give her money enough to move and buy a place near where her daughter lived with the father.
