I'm not from America and found the response of the (99%?) black audience in that stupid talkshow to Bruno's reaction about wanting to find himself a nice man extremely offensive.
I am totally not into the PC thing and I know in what kind of world we live in but when EVERYONE in the audience starting booing, I really thought; is this REALLY how the main African American population of the USA thinks of homosexuality?
Although I really find that hard to believe (I mean, OBVIOUSLY there are also lots of intelligent, non-shallow black people ass well and the people who come to shows like that are usually dumb anyway) I can't help but wondering; would a white audience with the same social-economic background have responded the same way? What is the reason for this massive condemnation?
Don't bother posting comments about me being a racist cause I won't respond to that kind of foolishness!
I had the feeling that most of the show scene was acted, just like with every Jerry Springer show, don't forget that in a majority, people will follow the option that is supported the most, and in this case it was against two man raising a child...
Why aren't you questioning the UFC scene where the predominately white audience was screaming homo and fags?That scene was far more worse than the black talk show audience.Neither response was acceptable but at least the black audience didn't throw things or use homophobic slurs. is this REALLY how the main White population of the USA thinks of homosexuality?
I think the reaction is more to the photographs taken with the baby. I don't think it matters if Bruno was straight or gay, but the pictures showing sex acts with a baby present is pretty outrageous.
Black people are a paradox in America. Generally speaking, they are to the left of the political spectrum as a whole. They vote and think in a "liberal" fashion. They are in favor of higher taxes, in favor of entitlements, etc, BUT the one area where black people differ from most on the left is in the question of homosexuality. It is well known that black people generally are intolerant of homosexuals while people who otherwise agree with them on most other political issues are actually quite liberal about homosexuality as well.
To answer your question, I believe a white audience with similar socioeconomic backgrounds would be as "intolerant" yet I would be willing to wager they are more conservative on other issues as well.
Much of this has to do with the fact that black people have a differing social structure form the rest of the country. In many ways they are a sub-culture with their own mores and what's more, GENERALLY SPEAKING (I can't stress that enough, I am speaking in generalizations here) black people tend to be more religious than their white liberal counterparts. This leads to less of an acceptance of a homosexual lifestyle which manifests itself in this manner. What I'm saying is, while I too am conservative (in most if not all manners of speaking) and I am religious, I am also Catholic. As a Catholic I have a more intellectual and more fleshed out manner of disagreeing with the homosexual lifestyle than say a smaller more egalitarian church with no real leadership, or rather no centralized leadership. This leads to hate, and basically ignorant rantings about gays. This is something you won't see in MSOT Catholics, what we mostly will say is "I will not call your sin virtue" but mostly Catholics have a live and let live attitude.

Perhaps "intellectual" was the wrong term to use, but what I mean to say is that I feel homosexuality is morally wrong. I feel it is harmful to anyone involved and should be avoided.
To me it is no different than incest. Most people are against incest. Even if both siblings are of legal age and consent, most everyone finds it morally obnoxious. The same can be said about homosexuality between consenting adults, it is morally obnoxious to some. Our society has changed over time and homosexuality has become more socially acceptable, but to some it is still wrong.
With all of that said, I really don't care who you sleep with. I don't care which lifestyle you choose, but will formulate an opinion and feel that you are leading an improper life. The same way I would look at an alcoholic and feel he is leading a bad life, or a boxer who continues to fight past his prime. It's simply harmful and I disagree.
I'm not hateful, I just happen to believe it's wrong. I have a philosophical, religious and moral reason for this, it's not like the blind hatred of some people.

With all the inherited intelligence, philosophy and booksmartness in the world, someone without any natural sense of empathy, someone close to them who is gay or someone who isn't actually gay themselves can't understand what is actually MEANS to be gay and that it's absolutely no choice!!
Depriving yourself from the most inportant and healthy thing in life, which is love, just because some people find the idea gross, have outdated beliefs based on their religion or support unproven and deceiving 'scientific' theories is totally unnessecary and a total shame!
To state that "it is harmful to anyone involved and should be avoided" is not offensive to me. Just hilarious :-)
I just watched this movie -- awful! -- and came to take a look at the board, and a specific part of your post caught my attention.
I feel homosexuality is morally wrong. I feel it is harmful to anyone involved and should be avoided.
Would you mind giving me some reasons why you feel it's harmful for the ones involved, even if both are of legal age and consent?
I always thought that whatever makes one happy is the right thing to do, as long as you don't harm others. I'm an extremely liberal person and I believe my opinions should be respect but also that I have to respect yours, even if different from mine.
That's why I'm seriously asking you to enlighten on this. Even though I'm a straight female, I have lots of gay friends. And I'm in a sexist and homofobic country in general [Brazil], so maybe your answer will help me see things from another perspective, since I know but don't really socialize with religious people.
--------------------------- You know me, I'm impulsive.
I'm not speaking about lesbians, but male homosexuals, and I don't know what they do in Brazil, but here in the US we know from scientific research that all male homosexuals put gerbils up their bums. While they may consent to do this, they often do get hurt and require medical attention increasing health care costs for us all. Also, it is quite traumatic for the gerbils.
This movie made zero attempt to hide the fact that the main character was gay. My question is, if its so morally wrong to you, why even watch it??? Being a former Christian (private school, religious parents, church every Sunday type thing), if this movie came out during that point in my life, I would have run from it and not bothered to even see something I used to find an immoral act against God's will.
Unless of course you didn't see it, so my next question is, why are you even on this discussion?
Black people in America in general are part of the religious right. Hands down, particularly ones over 40. No to abortion, no to gay marriage. It's all a bible-thumping thing. Look at the history of African Americans and how the Black church has been a staple.
Yup, Black Americans are notoriously anti-gay at least, also anti-abortion. They killed the pro-gay-marriage initiative in California in 2008 when they came out in droves to vote for a change (for Obama). In that year they simultaneously elected the most leftist, radically pro-abortion president America has ever seen AND destroyed gay Californians' work on Prop 8.
~~~~~~~ Please put some dashes above your sig line so I won't think it's part of your dumb post.
So are we just going to ignore the ending scene when they started throwing drinks and calling the guys *beep*
The black people in that scene were pissed off that Bruno was exploiting his black adopted kid. He also was ignorant and disrespectful of the black African culture.
It had nothing to do with him being a homosexual. And personality, I don't think its okay for a baby to have such a political stance thrust upon him in the form of wearing a shirt anyway.
Quite honestly, I'm offended by most of the responses here from people who barely know any black people personally (I don't mean that you once dated a mixed girl in college or that you have one black friend who is your co-worker). Assumptions based on generalizations and the media representation of black people is EXTREMELY dangerous and that is why harmful stereotypes exist that people like me have to fight against every freaking day.
Long story short: The percentage of African Americans who associate themselves as religious Christians, is significantly higher than that of White Caucasians...religions that condemn homosexuality.
The end.
