Was anyone else disturbed by this scene?

I'm talking about the crowd reaction to the 'cage fight'.

I know we are supposed to laugh at their ridiculous angry reaction, but to be honest I found heir reaction a bit disturbing. They got pretty violent and almost killed Sacha Baran Cohen, with the metal chair flying past his head.

Your thoughts?

reply

No. What else can you expect from a room full of hillbillies? He was so close to getting a head full of chair, soooooo close!

Darling, you can't rape a townie......

reply

Yes, although funny it was quite disturbing. Honestly the two guys were just kissing and rolling around on the floor, nothing so terrible that that reaction was needed.

I'd like to see their reactions to the films opening scene :)

reply

its terrible for straight people, the majority.

reply

Well to be fair, they were tricked into seeing something they didn't want to see. Their reaction was warranted, minus the flying chair.

reply

Their reaction (causing a riot) was "warranted"? Why didn't they just get their money back (if they paid any -- it was probably a free event).

reply

Yes, it was entirely warranted. Think about something sexual that you find completely gross and imagine you were tricked into seeing it live, the average person would be pretty pissed.

Why didn't they just get their money back (if they paid any -- it was probably a free event).

It's not about the money dude, their time was wasted and like I said, they were tricked into seeing something they find deplorable.

I'm pretty open-minded, so there's little (sexually speaking) that would enrage or truly disgust me... but if something like that DID happen to me, I still wouldn't try to kill anyone. Maybe I'd angrily grab my purse and storm out, but I certainly would not be throwing chairs and yelling "f@g, get out of my state." Nope, only hillbilly homophobes are capable of that kind of rage - methinks they doth protest too much, ya know? ;-)

reply

I did say 'minus the flying chair'. Besides that their reaction was warranted.

"the average person would be pretty pissed."

The average person is also 9 times out of 10 a complete moron (you don't have to even go farther than this website to see that).

Those people were hateful, tricked or not. People that try to justify such behavior amaze me.

reply

Hitler found Jews deplorable and he hated to see them on the street and owning businesses, so Hitler's behavior is warranted, no? I admit, an outrages example, but we do live in the 21st Century. We try to be civilized.

reply

Fallacy, people are disgusted not angry when they are tricked into watching two girls one cup, is not being disgusted is just standard hate.

reply

To be fair, they paid to see 'man-slamming action', so that's what they got.

Sacha Baron Cohen even ASKED them if they were ready for some man on man action, to which they cheered!

So I don't know why they got all upset. ???

They were promised some man slamming action and they got it.

The last scene was done very well. It posed a question: What is more appalling: Violence between two men who beat each other to a bloody pulp? Or, 2 men kissing and caressing each other?

You get your answer.

The audience members cheer like hell during the fight. It shows how fcked our society is in general. Then when they kiss, hell breaks loose outside the cage. Violence is everywhere when there is love between 2 men.

Great commentary on human behavior.

reply

Most of the audience looked like they were on meth, otherwise even the dumbest person in the world would have realized this was a complete setup.

reply

The crowd went to see a cage fight and were fed a bunch of beer for a desired reaction. There is nothing disturbing about their reaction, they got played for a prank, they did not pay or want to see 2 guys making out with each other and groping each other. If you watch the video many were laughing about it and they were just throwing food/beer cups. If Cohen got hit with the chair or someone knocked him out whose fault is it really, the angry drunk crowd that had a prank pulled on them or Cohen for creating the situation and putting himself in the situation and knowing the risks, same with when he goes camping with the hunters or implies the guy at the gun show is gay. Cohen is basically asking to get hit, it is funny how many people here are dumb enough to blame the people being pranked/insulted for getting mad or reacting violently instead of Cohen for trying to get a reaction and putting himself in the position to get hit after irritating someone.

Don't get me wrong I thought the movie was pretty funny but I don't feel I have to sneer at and criticize the people who are getting pranked, frankly those people often come off better then a straight actor pretending to be a gay guy playing jokes/insulting them when they are just minding their own business and not bothering anybody in most cases. Those people he plays pranks on have a pretty good sense of humor since they allow themselves to be put in the movie.

As for the idiots who say only dumb rednecks from the South would act this way you have to be kidding. If that happened in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or pretty much any other blue state you would have had almost the same reaction maybe worse. There were also black and hispanic people in the audience. If that happened in the ghetto or at a rap concert the reaction would have been much more violent. People riot in Philly, Eagles fans are known to throw things at people and players and become violent, in Canada there have been riots at rock concerts, etc. It is not just a Southern thing.

06986 i agree with you fully, i watched this film ready to be entertained and made to laugh in the way borat did so fully, but it really was a let down. I think your post sums up why also i felt a number of the situations were obviously staged, or not very realistic to life. The crowd went to see a violent show and expected to see that and yes had been drinking, then cohen comes out with his anti gay spiel (which could be argued is to show how moronic these people are that they would cheer his words) to whip them into a gay hating frenzy, then he does the whole gay thing. Now im not saying there werent any homophobes in that crowd who wouldnt have acted in the exact same way if he hadnt made his little speech, but i have to wonder if some people there really werent thinking about gays or if they hate them or not until cohen lead them down that path.

Also at the beginning of the kissing/groping you can see people laughing at it and obviously seeing it as a joke, its just when it went on for ever people got more and more angry-they probably realised or felt they were being mocked and didnt like it.

reply

he did lead them down that path - and it showed that if you lead homophobic americans down a certain path then they are willing to throw chairs to try and hurt someone and will be angry and shocked over men publicly kissing.

how dare we mock the homophobes for hating others for their sexuality - these homophobes need protection!

no doubt religion and poor education is the factor here. christianty 1 freedom 0.

I thought that was the funniest part of the movie! Holy crap I was laughing so hard I woke up the neighbors at 3am! The facial reaction of the redneck audience was awesome! They looked like they were going to have heart attacks right there.

I thought the real disturbing scene was Bruno's attempt to make peace in the middle east. And trying to seduce Ron Paul.

reply

That scene !!! it was as if something really bad was happening by the reactions of some of the people, most found it amusing but some took it dead serious and they were the funniest.

I think we all know that certain people are a bit backward in America !!

There are people like this all over though but in the minority in say Europe or the UK, homophobia seems to be more rife in the USA though, I feel sorry for them because they seem genuinely scared by it.

Have to say though that Bruno wasn't as funny as other Sacha Baron Cohens films, this was more trying to get a shock factor which isn't as comedic. It was also trying to put people in uncomfortable situations and see how they would react which in this film wasn't funny because you never ever got a proper reaction from anyone that Sacha could build upon, apart from the baby interviews and maybe the talk show.

Because the situations wern't funny a lot of the film fell flat which then meant that Sacha had to make things funny.

I think I laughed most when he said he swapped the baby for an ipad, when he wanted to add some bold lines to his military outfit and a few other lines in the film.

That scene was hilarious. His trolling of those homophobic rednecks was epic.

reply

I guess I am just not as open minded as I needed to be to watch this film. I turned it off after the first 30 minutes or so. The simulated gay sex scenes really made me sick.

reply

The cage fight was the best part of the whole film. I was LMAO the whole time.

reply

Which is hardly surprising, since the event largely consisted of low-IQ morons.

A poster made an interesting observation and analogy: the assemblage were perfectly happy to see to men beat each other senseless, but were enraged when two men expressed love for one another. That human trait (thankfully not shared by the majority, I'm confident in saying) is a very strange one, and this was a revalatory (and painfully funny) scene.

I've been to shows and performances before that were absolutely awful. Guess what I did when I decided I was dissatisfied? I walked out and went home. On a few occasions I asked for a refund. No inclination to throw anything or hurt anyone. You know, like a civilised person.
