James made it look easy

I had to remind myself after watching this film just how extremely difficult and stressful his job was. It's got to be one of the worst jobs you could have in the military. But he was excellent at it. He was so accustomed to it that he would actually go back to Iraq to keep doing it. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to keep going back to that kind of task. We're told he just loved the adrenaline rush. I'm not going to say he was crazy. But his dedication and effectiveness warrants respect, regardless of what motivated him.

He does deserve respect. But also pity. One of his lines is:

And the older you get, the fewer things you really love. And by the time you get to my age, maybe it's only one or two things. With me, I think it's one.
In the end he gives in to the one thing. Like an addict surrendering to his drug.

Army needs more bomb techs. In my opinion, he just became desensitized after a few hundred bombs he defused. He must be quite an expert at it too, i just don't get one thing... In the whole movie there was only one RC bomb, and even that one had to stand like 30-50 meters from the bomb, it is 2004, is that it?

Yeah, I think he did become numb to it after a while. I agree, he did make it look really easy, I mean, nearly 880 of those things. I'd be scared of trying to disable at least one of those.

Those scenes nearly made me retch; I can't imagine a job like that.
