The Kill Zone

In the opening sequence, Thompson manually grabs the busted cart and places the explosives. As he's walking back he relays that he's 5, then 25 meters away from the blast.

Then they spot the guy on the phone, and Thompson starts running back. He clearly covers a bit of ground before the detonation. I'm wondering if either there was more explosives there than they originally thought, if the kill zone is more than 25 meters, or if we're just supposed to take it that he didnt really cover any ground while running and was still inside the kill zone, which doesn't make sense cause he quite clearly made it more than 25 meters.

My thoughts too as it appeared that he would be injured instead of being killed altogether. Yet I recall the scene where Sgt James was working to defuse an IED. As he began to trace the location of the detonation point he finds an additional shell(s) - Him finally pulling on the cords and as the other shells emerged from the dirt was some real powerful and unforgetable imagery as to what these guys were confronted with.
