Osbornes' Dad

Any ideas what was wrong with him? Ozzy was talking to him and saying things like, "I think you'd approve" acknowledging that he couldn't speak. Maybe a stroke? Or his years in service drove him to a nervous breakdown? I know they never explained it but I'm wondering if anyone has any theories .

Don't think his condition is really germane to the plot. I think the Coens just added it to make Cox's social life seem even more dismal and disturbing. It's obvious he's trying to confide in his father. Aside from having no real friends (probably due to his drinking), his one living parent is incapable of conversation.
