Similarities to The Night House. (SPOILERS for TNH and Hellraiser)
When I learnt that The Night House was originally a Hellraiser script I wondered what exactly they were planning. Since the same team now got to make a Hellraiser film I was interested to see what they carried over.
The room manipulations - The Night House did a brilliant job of making the house feel like a presence. Later in the film the house malforms, with ceilings rising and hallways elongating, when death is coming to claim her back. This was utilized again as the cenobites come for the bloodbound victim. This was always a part of Hellraiser, the first has doorways appearing in walls. That's likely the source inspiration for the original TNH script.
The house to trap evil spirts - The house was rigged to trap and contain the cenobites. In TNH the husband was building a house to trick the entity and was utilizing the Louvre doll to try bind it. He was reading about confusing patterns, mazes and labyrinths in a book called Caerdroia. The house in Hellraiser has a peculiar patterning to the barricaded outer layer and the inner gates. It's likely to have some powers to stop the cenobites? The character who built the house was an 'occult' expert.
Sacrifices to entities - This new iteration of Hellraiser has the cenobites requiring 6 sacrifices. Come completition you get a reward of your choosing from Leviathan. The core plot to TNH is that the husband is sacrificing Women who look like his Wife to try to trick death. In Hellraiser the end goal is to reclaim a lost one, whilst it's flipped in TNH as the goal is to protect a loved one.
Anyone notice any other similarities?
It seems the core plot points revolve around the houses, room malformations, sacrifices and lost loved ones.
I do wonder how this Hellraiser script was altered since TNH got made. Perhaps this film would have originally featured a husband and wife? A case of suicide and sacrificing people to try bring them back? Or maybe this was the script all along and TNH was a riff of what they did here.
