The ending (obviously big spoilers)

You know, up to the point of the main character getting to the 13 goal i was just ready to proclaim this a unique mastepiece for the ages, yet the ending is just.....where to begin?

Ok, so he was killed by his father or just some guy who looked like his father?

The girl is seeing at the end the same detective that was leading the police in the hospital? Was the whole police involved in this? who was the guy with a cigarret that the same detective talked with?

So, the mastermind of this game is...a 12 year old kid sitting in a all-white room, Matrix reloaded arquitect style? in a James Bond villian chair, even with cat included and goons dressed in black? I'm all in favor of going over the top in a film, but that just killed a lot of the suspense the film was building. Even if it's suppose to be some kind of message about kids these days being cold and capable of doing something like that, it just felt retarded, for the lack of a better word.

The film is good, and does deserves some of the praise it has got, but that ending kill it. And i have my doubts that a second view will change it, it was just lame and uninspiring compaired to all of what the film had made up to that point.

i can see where you are coming from but i disagree.

i thought the ending with the father gave the movie so much more meaning. it gave the main character a HUGE arch and it showed that he wasnt a product of his upbringing, not matter what the flashbacks led you to believe. pretty powerful.

i think the man with the cigar talking to the detective was a ambiguous character representing the portion of the police that were owned by the makers of the game. however, the detective in the hospital was a force that was not controlled by the game. he was going to bring it down. and in the end, when he is walking up to the girl, he is going to get all the evidence he needs from her to bring justice and take down the game.

now when it comes to the young kid being the mastermind... i do believe that was an odd choice by the director. but i think he kid represents what the main character could have been had society taken control over him. the polar opposites were a nice contrast.

of course, all of this is just speculation, and i could be totally wrong. anyhow, i thought it was an excellent film. very well made.

p.s. dragon eye morrison, eh? cool name. i love me some electric dragon also haha

The problems with the dad thing are plenty, plot-wise mostly, and i guess you would say that i have to pass the film a lot of things, which i can do with no problem. It gave to the main character a strong side for sure, but then, this game company has been existing from who knows when? they were video recording everything the dad did? since almost the father had the kid with a thai woman?

It's just that the father character is shown in such one dimensional way, yes, he's simply another person playing the game, but it happens to be a very vital character playing the game.
The kid thing, again, i have no problem with this type of fantasy settings and what not, but the film was working out everything else in such a serious way, that it just felt out place all this "bad guy watchign everything from a chair" imagery. Something more reserved in terms of visuals would had worked better, me thinks.

I'll give it a re-watch for sure, but i really doubt i can change my mind about the ending. It feels way too anti-climatic, not in a good Oldboy way where the ending has a reason to be like that. This felt ambigous in the wrong places and in the wrong moments.

p.s. I have to say i'm surprised i haven't seen anyone else with a nick from such a great film like ED8V. Good timing for me to pick this one huh? GUITARRRRR!!!!! :D

haha GUIATARRR!!!!! i love electric bolt buddah too. he was soo awesome.

anyways, your arguments are completely valid, and i have a friend who thinks the same way as you. i wonder if they will fix things when they remake it in the states (inevitably) or keep the same ending. time will tell. good chating with you mate.

reply

a remake would be nice one day, hopefully when Thai movies get better and more high budget like Koreans or Holywood they can remake it or maybe... shall i dare say it... Holywood can remake it... i doubt it but they can...

reply

I highly doubt the remake would dare to be as transgresive as the original. The Weinsteins are producing it, so you can begin to guess how bad it's going to be.

why does it need a bigger budget ? so americans don't have to read subtitles ? :D

reply

Eh, I can't believe you said "the film was working out everything else in such a serious way". I mean, I was expecting an intense thriller, and what I got was a over the top black-comedy with some shocking cartoonish scenes (a-la Takashi Miike).

I didn't like the ending at all, either. The thing with the kid, the white room, henchmen, control of the police force... it was all just way over the top. But probably what I liked the least was the deal with the father. First they show him beating the kid... then we see he loves the kid... then we see him stabbing Chet and laughing maniacally. I would have liked it better if there was even the slightest hesitation, sign of remorse, something. That ending left everything very one dimensional.

I'm done with thoughtful signatures for the time being.

yeah, same here. what bothered me the most was 1) it was inconclusive. was the father abusive or was he loving? i didn't get it. 2) how did the father scene into the scenario of the game at all. what was the father's 13th task supposed to be? "lay down in the chair and wait aproximately 10 minutes and then stab your son. don't stab him immediately though, or you will lose the game, give him a long enough chance to stab you first"???

also, what was the point of the chick and the cop meeting at the end.

oh and one last question. the kid said "we both killed him". i don't get it. yes, he mentioned before that her involvement was a problem and told chad to kill either her or the dog and also was angry at chad for killing the dog instead of her. is that supposed to mean that the father thing was only inserted instead of a different 13th level as a punishment because he had chosen wrongly? not that i would not like the idea, but that would have been against the rules of the game. until that point they were clearly following all the rules that were mentioned.

nevertheless, can someone please tell me a link where i can buy a dvd of the sequel "14 beyond" please?

So in short, the ending was like that because obviously there's a sequel?
And is it just me or this film felt like a softcore version of the Saw films?

I could almost hear Jigsaw saying: "I want to play a game..."

Was there an anti-American message in this movie? There could have been, in my opinion. The writer and director made the true "bad guy" the stereotypical ugly American. I can't say I disagree with that message, but I'm just saying, you know, that there is some xenophobic undertone. Obviously, it could've been a message against wife-beating (note the new boyfriend of Phuchit's ex-girlfriend).

Oh, an yeah, I agree, the kid in the all-white room with James Bond-like goons and a cat were a little over-the-top. Could've been much simpler.

I think the point of the ending was that Chit redeems himself somewhat by choosing not to be bad (even though he gets killed as a result). The point that they were trying to make was that even though they picked a vulnerable man and had seduced him with money no one forced him to do any of those things he had been doing.

Yes the child running the whole thing and atmosphere was a bit of a mis-queue, but it was going to be hard to make a setup that was worthy of the stuff that the outfit was pulling off.

The cop we can assume realized that Chits rampage was categorical of other players who had played the game and thus was interested in him for that reason.

As for the american thing, the lead actor is Eurasian so that might have played in it.

not only do i have a problem with the kid+cat, fact that it was just a commercial operation running online probably was as disappointing. it could've used some more originalit.
nevertheless all the rest of the movie was thoroughly enjoyable, and i actually did like the whole dad plottwist a lot.
real life game type movies are very rare (anyone know any good ones?) and its always a treat to see what kinda twists people can come up with.

Man....I just can't grasp that ending. It was pretty decent, although it paid some respect to the Saw series, but the ending had me scratching my head.
