Is the show banking guest stars?
Watching the season premiere tonight with Bear and guest partner Jake Gyllenhall Bear mentioned while traversing an ice cave that two teens in Washington state had one collapse on them, breaking their backs LAST year. That would mean according to Bear's narration that was 2010.
I always want to know where they dig up their survival horror stories, and the only story that turned up after a rigorous search kept turning up the only news story that fit the description--from 2008.
In other words, his narrative is basically two years old since referring to the incident as "last year".
Now I work in reality TV, but I've never seen a show "bank" episodes so long in advance. Of course, it would explain why they referenced two of his older films--Jarhead (2005) and Brokeback Mountain (2005), when newer films like Prince of Persia (2010) and older ice disaster film The Day After Tomorrow (2004) would have been a better point of reference, since they both were stories that took place in extreme climates (hot for PoP, cold for tDAT).
On a side note, I can't help but wonder if they play up the two of them together--tight in a snow cave, a candlelight and some hot cocoa together, the both of them shirtless water traversing arm-in-arm... sure, you could say it's out of necessity, but with Jake, you can't help but wonder the sheer magnitude of women hoping for a Brokeback moment to unleash.
