How do people still watch this?

Like many, I stopped watching the instant I found out the show is fake. Guys in bear suits? Hotel stays? Camera crew helping him out with food? This show was initially advertised as a show that can give you advice on how to survive in the wild. As soon as the truth was known, the show added a disclaimer and changed its objective to "entertainment," and nothing else.

Meanwhile, Survivorman was doing the same thing, only he didn't have a camera crew, he didn't stay in hotel rooms... he did everything on his own.

Now, Survivorman has quit the game. If someone wants to watch this kind of show, they only have Bear now... there is no alternative anymore.

Bear is insulting your intelligence with every lie he tells you in his show. He thinks that you are stupid enough to believe everything he says. He only cares about ratings. His advice can potentially get you killed, so watch this show only for the entertainment value.

why do you type on a forum consistently when you appear to hate him so much? That answer your question. Oh and survivorman used shotguns, camera crew, horses, and many other tools. He was in fact himself a tool. Bear is not. Survivorman quit because he is a huge wuss. A typical egotistical canadian who can't even play the harp well.

Therapy is not for everyone, unless you talk to yourself. Oh and think you are a religious figure.

I thought that you only stalked PhoChris... But I'm game... If I hated the show I wouldn't watch it... But every monday at 10pm My TV is on Discovery Channel... When Man vs Wild is on. Why? Because the show is entertaining... Last Episode (Monday Jan. 19, 2009) Bear went inside an ABANDONED MINE... One of the places that is not safe for Survival Situations... Often the wooden supports of these abandoned mines are rotten and may cause a cave-in... Did that stop Bear and crew? No...

And Why do you stalk the Survivorman boards jluvdr? Cause you seem to hate Les a lot and you complain about me being a "hater" and posting consistently. Take your own advice...

You claim that Les used horses, camera crew, shotguns, and many other tools...
But what about Bear? He's used Camera Crews, Build teams... (The Desert Island raft didn't build itself...Y'know) He has food delivered... (The sheep donated by a local farm for one of the challenges, the rabbit that was "caught" on a snare, etc. Magic handholds that appear when he dives into icy waters... and other "safety nets". Where are the reports of Les using Camera crew when he's "alone"? or being a fake? Waitaminute! The reports on being a fake ar Bear Grylls'...

I believe that Mr. Grylls is more of a tool than Mr. Stroud... But Even if Bear is a Tool, that doesn't stop the show from being entertaining...

Les didn't quit cause he was a wuss... he was getting tired. He's not as young as he used to be... and the show was taking a toll on his body. So if Bear quits because he got hurt in Antartica, that would make him a wuss by your standards...

BTW Les Stroud plays the HARMONICA... A Harp would be too cumbersome to carry around...

People watch it because it's entertaining and most of the crap on TV today makes people want to poke their eyes out. Even if he doesn't always give the best tips, this is a lot better than watching The Hills or the month long marathons of Little People, Big World and John and Kate Plus 8.

Plus, when he does really outlandish stuff he always makes a point of saying that it should be a last resort type of thing. I'm pretty sure most people, unless they are mindnumbingly stupid, won't try the things he does that are obviously out of their own range of ability. Apart from the crazy stunts, a lot of what he does is useful for someone if they find themselves in these situations.

Oh, and he's hot and I like to answer the question I start every viewing with... Will he or won't he drink his urine on today's show?

Soundstage8: Even if Bear is a fake and you enjoy the show, you can keep on watching it... it's your choice... and welcome to the Man vs. Wild forum... It can be a little disorientating at first, but it's really a nice place...

Les is so hardcore he can't catch a fish with a pole, nor can he catch dinner with a shotgun. Bear doesn't use any of these items.

baseballgirl - Apart from the crazy stunts, a lot of what he does is useful for someone if they find themselves in these situations.

Can you list me 5 things, aside from the crazy stunts, you have learned from Bear that would be usefull if you found yourself in these situations?

Starting to wonder a bit myself... A genuine and lovely bloke. But, once you've seen a few of these shows, it seems you've seen them all... He really needs to find himself a new niche - Ray Mears and Bruce Parry have done most of this stuff very much better before.

Bear Grylls is pure entertaiment. You don't watch this and then think to yourself think I'll go into the wilderness and see if I can do it myself. The most we'll ever get to extreme nature is sitting in our back garden with a can of beer or going to the local park.

When I saw the first season I joked that he always likes to get nude, and no wonder with a body like his. He's a huge gay icon. I'm sure there are many who watch this just to see Bear get nekkid'.

The eating creepy crawlies and cutting up dead animals, you don't need to do any of this, again, Bear is just indulging in his machoism, it's over the top and flashy, but that's why you watch it.

Bear is simply eye candy and visually more applealing with an easy going personality than say a Ray Mears or that Survivorman. That's why they keep making more of these shows. People like him.

And he's not arrogant which is the best thing about him. I've seen him on chat show when ironically he's outside his comfort zone and he's a normal humble guy, a family man. He's not preaching or patronizing, just entertaining.

I don't care if any of it is faked. I don't care if he doesn't build his own shelters. I don't care if he doesn't hunt and kill his own game. I don't care about any of that.

I watch Bear for:

1) his boundless energy; scrambling down a mountainside before the storm sets in; I'd still be sitting there, crying!
2) how often do you see a grown man eating bugs?
3) I LOVE his accent, it flows into my ears like chocolate sauce over ice cream.
4) Bear. Naked.

It's all fake, these men aren't going to die for the sake of more viewers or a bigger demographic. Les retired because "doing it by yourself" is great for the hardcore? people who watch his show. But for him it was taxing. Both Les and Bear knew this, Les thought he could "tough it out" but soon found out that placing and carrying camera's was not only stupid but time consuming and energy consuming.

I rather he have a crew with him and just keep providing me with tips on survival.

It's a great show, I like how he present interesting facts about the locations and stuff, it's entertaining but also educational..
