People are missing the point with....*Here be major spoilers!*

...the elimination of L. Once L is dead, Light is ecstatic as he now feels no one is in his way to becoming a "god" in his new world. Light views himself as being just and on the side of good but he is clearly evil. Whenever there is evil there will always be good to fight against it and the death of L was not the end of Light's problems. There will ALWAYS be someone to rise up to fight against evil and it wasn't going to be smooth sailing as Light originally thought it would be. Plus, they were able to pull off an incredible shocker to the audience by killing L off and making the point at the same time that whenever there is evil and good is vanquished, there will always be someone else to take that good's place until the end of time.
